Jack Daniel’s Aged Series
Jack Daniel’s Aged Series currently features 10, 12 and 14 year old Tennessee Whiskeys. For Jack Daniel’s 14 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey, this release marks the first time since the early- to mid-1900s that Jack Daniel’s has offered an expression at this age. Even more mature whiskeys are planned for future releases.
The Details
Like all Jack Daniel’s whiskeys, Jack Daniel’s 14 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey is distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee and is mellowed drop by drop through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal. It is made from a mash bill of 80% corn, 8% rye & 12% malted barley.
Tasting Notes – Jack Daniel’s 14 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Dark cherries, dark plums, tart orange peel; brown sugar, milk chocolate and toffee; moderate oak; hint of cedar and leather; alcohol noticeable, but expected for the 126.3 proof
👉🏻Taste: Oak, milk chocolate, tart orange, syrupy brown sugar, dark cherries, tannins
👉🏻Finish: Oak, increasing black pepper spice; increasingly dry; mild dry wood and barrel char later on; tannins; very long; moderate deep warmth
The nose of Jack Daniel’s 14 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey is fruit forward, with dark stone fruits like dark cherries and plums. There is also a bit of a bite from tart orange peel. However, there is a surprising brown sugar sweetness, as well. The brown sugar is joined by milk chocolate and toffee, which become increasingly evident over time, with the combination providing some pleasant confectionary notes. Sweet oak is noticeable, too, along with cedar, and a hint of leather, and those older barrel flavors continue to increase sip after sip. The alcohol vapor is clearly present, but not unexpected for the 126.3 proof.
The taste has noticeable oak, tart orange citrus, tannins and moderately sweet syrupy brown sugar. After a sip or two, dark cherries and milk chocolate become more noticeable. The finish has growing and lasting black pepper spice, with the oak turning to dry wood later on, and a mild barrel char becoming more noticeable, as well. Overall, the mouthfeel in the finish becomes more dry and spicy, with mild tannins, too. The finish is quite long, with lingering dry wood, tannins spice and a deep down warmth.
The Age Is Quite Evident
The 14 years of aging is quite evident in this whiskey, however the flavors remain quite balanced and enjoyable. With each sip, the older barrel flavors become increasingly evident and this whiskey bears scant resemblance to Old No. 7. Perhaps it is the fairly high proof, but the syrupy brown sugar sweetness in the taste took me a bit by surprise. And, in spite of the proof, this whiskey is by no means “hot”.
Summary – Jack Daniel’s 14 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey Review
Jack Daniel’s 14-year-old Tennessee Whiskey is a very enjoyable pour. There is no mistaking that it is a mature whiskey, with older barrel flavors being quite evident. Nonetheless, there are plenty of rich flavors, and just the right amount of fruit, as well. This is a delicious whiskey that anyone who enjoys an older whiskey should love. Have you tried it? What did you think?🥃
