Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye Review

Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye arrived as Jack's newest Single Barrel Special Release, matured nearly ten years in one of the distillery’s oldest hilltop barrelhouses and bottled at barrel proofs ranging from 130.2 – 148.8 proof. The Latest in the Single Barrel Series: Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye

The latest whiskey in Jack Daniel’s annual Single Barrel Special Release series is Tanyard Hill Rye, a Barrel Proof Tennessee Rye Whiskey matured in one of the distillery’s oldest barrelhouses. Tanyard Hill sits next to the well-known Coy Hill and is home to four barrelhouses built in the early 1960s. This release was distilled in November 2015, entered into new handmade American white oak barrels, and matured in Barrel House 1 atop Tanyard Hill, where the deep winter and summer temperature swings helped shape its character over nearly ten years.

Tasting Notes – Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye Review

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

🎨Color: Dark amber

👉🏻 Nose: Rich sweet caramel, mild rye spices, dark cherries and plums. Hints of spearmint and hot cinnamon with mild dry oak. Alcohol vapor is definitely present and appropriate for the almost 146 proof.
👉🏻 Taste: Moderately sweet with brown sugar, caramel and dark cherries up front. Tannins fairly rapidly develop, with mild oak and leather evident later on.
👉🏻 Finish: The tannins continue into the finish, with a crescendo of white pepper spice as the mouthfeel turns fairly dry. Tobacco joins in later, growing more noticeable and combining with char and dry oak. The finish is long, with a not unexpected deep-down warmth. Tobacco, char, dry oak and mild tannins linger for quite some time.

Sample Bottle & Glencairn Glass - Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye Review

Summary

The nose of Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye is surprisingly rich and fruit forward, which is not what I expected from an almost 146 proof rye. I would also have anticipated more rye spice, yet those notes are fairly subtle. That may be a manifestation of the nearly ten years this whiskey has spent in the barrel, since rye spices often mellow over time.

The palate is an abrupt change from the nose, and a bit more of what I would have expected for the age and proof, sans the relative lack of rye spices. The older barrel flavors of leather and tobacco are a nice complement as they appear later on the palate and continue into the finish. Combined with the tannins and spice, it all adds up to a complex and engaging pour.

Conclusion – Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye Review

Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye is definitely not for the faint of heart. But, for those who enjoy a high proof complex pour, this is one you’ll want to try. Since this is a single barrel release, your results will vary, and there is likely a noticeable difference between this bottle at almost 146 proof and others that are closer to 130 proof. Maybe I need to try them all and see!

Have you tried Jack Daniel’s Tanyard Hill Rye? If so, what was the proof of yours? Did you pick up similar flavors to mine, or was yours different? I’d love to know! Cheers!🥃
