Bottle & Glencairn Glass - Jeptha Creed Bruce's Blue Bourbon Review

From Sweet and Complex to Dry and Spicy

As with many of the bourbons made with heirloom corn that I have tried, identifying all of the flavors in Bruce’s Blue was somewhat challenging and took a bit of time. Ultimately, I found this to be a very pleasant pour, although it is somewhat less complex than I would have expected from a mash bill containing heirloom corn and malted rye. Interestingly, the complexity decreased from the nose to the finish, which seems atypical. The nose was as I anticipated, with an abundance of flavors ranging from sweet caramel and candies to tart citrus and hot cinnamon. Those flavors continued into the taste, minus the candies, although the mouthfeel was a little thin and dry. The fairly pronounced dryness in the finish was a bit of a surprise, but it went well with the hot cinnamon spice and tart citrus.

A Pleasant Pour That Defied Expectations — Jeptha Creed Bruce’s Blue Bourbon Review

Don’t get me wrong. I am enjoying Bruce’s Blue Bourbon. Its combination of flavors and mouthfeel works. It is just not quite what I was expecting, given the usual complexity and full flavors and mouthfeel that heirloom corn bourbons, and malted rye, often provide. If you enjoy mildly sweet flavors at first, followed by increasing hot cinnamon spice, tart citrus and pronounced dryness, this is one you will want to try. However, if you are a fan of sweeter, classic bourbon flavors, this may not be for you. Have you tried Jeptha Creed Bruce’s Blue Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
