Grains – Jeptha Creed Wheated Bourbon Review

The base grain for all of Jeptha Creed’s bourbons is Bloody Butcher corn, which is grown on the family farm. What is interesting about many of the other grains used in their bourbons, is that they are all malted. For example, this bourbon is made from both malted wheat and malted barley, in addition to the Bloody Butcher corn.

While it is common for malted barley to be used in bourbon mashes, malted rye is less common, and malted wheat is downright rare. According to the Jeptha Creed website, due to a fortuitous accident when they were distilling their initial test batches at a distillery in Wisconsin, malted grains were delivered instead of unmalted ones. As it turns out, the Nethery’s, the owners of Jeptha Creed Distillery, loved their results with these malted grains, and they have used them ever since. That’s why it comes as no surprise to me that malted wheat is used in Jeptha Creed 6 Year Old Wheated Bourbon.

Tasting Notes – Jeptha Creed 6 Year Wheated Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Grain and malt forward; cherry candy; hint of sweet apples; brown sugar, light caramel; hint of sugar cookies; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Brown sugar, light caramel, malt and grain, hint of cherry, mild tannins
👉🏻Finish: Growing white pepper spice; hint of cherries; graininess; tannins with increasing dryness; dry wood later on; fairly long with pleasant warmth

The graininess and maltiness in the nose stand out, with flavors such as cherry candy, sweet apples, brown sugar, light caramel and sugar cookies becoming more noticeable later on. The taste brings brown sugar sweetness, more grains and malt, light caramel, and a hint of cherry and mild tannins. White pepper grows in the finish, with lingering cherries and grains. As time goes on, the fairly long finish becomes increasingly dry, with tannins and dry wood, too.

Malted Wheat

I have only had whiskeys made with malted wheat a couple of times, at most, so the flavor really isn’t one I easily recognize. Interestingly, Jeptha Creed Four Grain Bourbon is made with a slightly larger amount of malted grains than Jeptha Creed Wheated Bourbon. In that bourbon, malted rye and malted wheat account for 15% and 10% of its mash bill, respectively. Nonetheless, I don’t remember quite as much maltiness and graininess in its flavor profile. Therefore, I assume the malted wheat is accounting for the majority of those characteristics in this bourbon. Bloody Butcher corn is also a very flavorful corn, and is likely contributing to those characteristics, and some of the other flavors, as well.

Conclusion – Jeptha Creed Wheated Bourbon Review

As with all of Jeptha Creed’s bourbons, their taste is fairly unique. This bourbon’s graininess reminds me somewhat of an American single malt, so I would think fans of that genre would probably enjoy this bourbon. However, it also has plenty of sweetness, letting us know that it is indeed a bourbon. If you are looking for something just a little bit different, and are a fan of a grain and malt forward bourbon, then you’ll want to give the Jeptha Creed 6 Year Old Wheated Bourbon a try! Cheers!🥃
