Background

Laphroaig Elements 3.0 Single Malt Islay Scotch Whisky is the third release in the distillery’s experimental Elements Series, which explores how small variations in production influence whisky flavor. This expression was created following an unusual incident — a kiln fire that burned longer and hotter than normal during the malting process. Rather than discarding the resulting malt, Laphroaig’s whisky-making team distilled and matured it, leading to a distinct single malt.

Tasting Notes – Laphroaig Elements 3.0 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻 Nose: Ample peat smoke, ash, and brininess with mild sweetness and light butterscotch. Alcohol vapor is noticeable and appropriate for the proof.
👉🏻 Taste: Considerable peat smoke, phenols, and ash balanced by moderate simple syrup and honey sweetness. Mild tart citrus and hints of dark chocolate emerge mid-palate.
👉🏻 Finish: Mild lingering sweetness, ash, and moderate white pepper spice. Notes of mild tart orange peel appear as the long finish continues with spice, dry oak, and ash that linger for quite some time.

Conclusion – Laphroaig Elements 3.0 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review

Needless to say, if you’re not a fan of peat and smoke, this probably isn’t the whiskey for you. However, if you are, you’re in for a treat. The smoke and ash are quite intense, yet are balanced by pleasant sweetness, brininess, butterscotch, citrus, and dark chocolate. For me, this is a very special and enjoyable pour.
