Lasso Motel Whiskey Is A New Brand, But They Have Come Out Swinging!

Lasso Motel Whiskey is a new brand, but they have come out swinging. In addition to this 10-year old cask strength rye, they have released a couple of bourbons, an 18-year old light whiskey and at least 8 other finished bourbons. Since I don’t want to bore you by repeating what I have already posted, I will refer you to one of my other Lasso Motel Whiskey Reviews or to the brand’s press release.

The Specifics: Lasso Motel 10-Year Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye Whiskey

Lasso Motel Rye is distilled at MGP, now known as the Ross and Squibb Distillery. It is made from their classic 95% rye, 5% malted barley mash bill. After distillation, it’s aged 10 years, and ultimately bottled at cask strength.

Tasting Notes – Lasso Motel 10-Year Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass

👉🏻Nose: Tart orange citrus, anise, cloves and other rye spices, subtle burnt caramel, brown sugar, vanilla; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Tart lime citrus, licorice, relatively mild rye spices; mild brown sugar sweetness, vanilla, mild dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Growing white pepper spice, lingering tart citrus; dry later on with dry oak and mild char; fairly long with a deep warmth.

The nose of Lasso Motel 10-Year Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye has classic 95/5 MGP rye notes, such as tart orange citrus, anise, cloves and other rye spices. However, there are some unexpected confectionary notes like brown sugar, vanilla and burnt caramel. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.

Next, similar, but slightly different, flavors continue into the taste. For example, the citrus changes to tart lime, and the anise changes to licorice. Rye spices are relatively mild, as they often are as rye whiskeys increase in age. There are also again some richer and sweeter notes, such as mild brown sugar and vanilla. A bit of dry oak is present, as well, in addition to growing white pepper spice.

The finish has increasing white pepper spice, lingering but diminished tart citrus, and a mild “tang”. Later on, it becomes more dry, with dry oak and mild barrel char. The spice continues on, as well. It’s a long finish, leaving me with quite a bit of deep down warmth.

Ryes Tend To Mellow With Age, Yet Become More Complex

The sharper flavors of rye whiskeys often mellow a bit as they age, particularly once they reach a decade or so. Lasso Motel 10-Year Single Barrel Rye Whiskey began life as an MGP 95/5 rye. But, unlike the “in your face” citrus and rye spice of a younger MGP rye, those almost overwhelming flavors have been taken down a notch. Don’t get me wrong, those flavors we all know and love are definitely still there. However, now they work and play well with others. That’s good, because this rye has gained some unexpected flavors and complexity with age.

While the citrus and rye spices are just a bit toned down, anise and licorice are now quite pronounced in the nose, and to a lesser extent, the taste. That’s a flavor that I have found in ryes, albeit not that frequently, and it is quite noticeable in this one. Some of the richer flavors that are present in the taste are not unsurprising in a rye of this age, as well, and add a nice contrast. The spice in the finish reminds me again that this is indeed a 95/5 rye.

Conclusion

Overall, Lasso Motel 10-Year Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye Whiskey is a very enjoyable pour. If you enjoy the flavors of a 95/5 rye, but would like them a little more mellow and with added complexity, then this rye whiskey is one to try. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
