Lasso Motel Whiskey Was Founded By Devin Odell

Lasso Motel Whiskey was founded by drinks industry veteran Devin Odell, President of Dynasty Spirits. Devin wanted to add a high end bourbon to his portfolio, and thus this brand was born. According to the initial company press release: “Lasso Motel Whiskey was inspired by Odell’s time at the storied Belmont Hotel—a now-shuttered but historic Dallas landmark reminiscent of the iconic Chateau Marmont. The hotel, once a vibrant hub for artists and celebrities, offered stunning views of the city. Encapsulated by the rock-and-roll nostalgia and the sense of history that the Belmont represented, Odell’s memories of this place laid the foundation for the timeless essence of Lasso Motel Whiskey.”

Devin went all in on his new line of whiskeys. There are currently 4-, 8- and 18-year old straight whiskeys, a 10-year old barrel strength straight rye, and a large collection of finished bourbons.

The Specifics – Lasso Motel 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review

Lasso Motel 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey is distilled at the Green River Distilling Company. The mash bill is 70% Corn, 21% Rye and 9% Malted Barley. That’s Green River’s standard bourbon mash bill. Consequently, I find it a bit perplexing that this whiskey is not labelled as a bourbon. I am assuming that it is, as their other Green River Distilling Co whiskeys are called bourbons. Nonetheless, the label states only that the bourbon was aged in “charred white oak barrels”. There’s no mention that the barrels are new, which is a requirement for bourbon. I would assume that they are, and that this is a bourbon, but for now we’ll just have to go with calling it a straight whiskey.

Tasting Notes – Lasso Motel 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review!

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet toffee, caramel & brown sugar; dark cherries; background of mild baking spices with cloves; dry oak; alcohol vapor appropriate for proof
👉🏻Taste: Sweet brown sugar simple syrup; sweet dark cherries; caramel; dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Moderate black pepper spice; dry oak; mild barrel char later on; fairly long; pleasant warmth

The nose starts off quite rich, with sweet toffee, caramel and brown sugar, as well as dark cherries. Those flavors are on a background of mild baking spices, including cloves. There’s a noticeable, but not overpowering, amount of dry oak, as well. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.

The taste of Lasso Motel 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey starts off quite sweet; moreso than the nose. Brown sugar simple syrup combined with sweet dark cherries and caramel blend well with a a bit of dry oak. With time, the sweetness fades and black pepper grows and lingers, with the taste becoming fairly spicy. The character becomes more dry later on, with dry oak and mild barrel char. At the end of the long finish, I am left with a pleasant warmth and a lingering mild smokiness.

Conclusion

Lasso Motel 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey’s nose brings a nice combination of sweet, confectionery-like flavors combined with dark cherries and some spice. The dry oak is definitely there, and provides a nice contrast to the sweeter flavors. However, this is not an overly oak-forward bourbon at all, so there’s no need to fear. Nonetheless, for four years old, there is a bit more oak than I would have necessarily expected. The taste is a bit sweeter than the nose, but otherwise has classic bourbon flavors, albeit a bit heavy on the brown sugar simple syrup. However, the finish is more dry, with plenty of spice and a bit of lingering smoky barrel char. Overall. It all adds up to a very pleasant pour.

If you enjoy these classic bourbon flavors, with a bit of dry oak and spice, but on the sweet side up front, then you’ll want to give Lasso Motel 4-Year Straight Kentucky Whiskey a try. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers! 🥃
