Lasso Motel Whiskey Was Founded By Devin Odell
Lasso Motel Whiskey was founded by drinks industry veteran Devin Odell, President of Dynasty Spirits. Devin wanted to add a high end bourbon to his portfolio, and thus this brand was born. According to the initial company press release: “Lasso Motel Whiskey was inspired by Odell’s time at the storied Belmont Hotel—a now-shuttered but historic Dallas landmark reminiscent of the iconic Chateau Marmont. The hotel, once a vibrant hub for artists and celebrities, offered stunning views of the city. Encapsulated by the rock-and-roll nostalgia and the sense of history that the Belmont represented, Odell’s memories of this place laid the foundation for the timeless essence of Lasso Motel Whiskey.”
Devin went all in on his new line of whiskeys. There are currently 4-, 8- and 18-year old straight whiskeys, a 10-year old barrel strength straight rye, and a large collection of finished bourbons.
The Specifics – Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review
Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey is distilled at the Barton 1792 Distillery. The mash bill is 75% Corn, 21% Rye and 4% Malted Barley. That’s not Barton’s standard bourbon mash bill, but one that has occasionally been associated with them. Similar to the Lasso Motel 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey, I find it a bit perplexing that this whiskey is not labelled as a bourbon. For this one, even moreso, since in the tasting notes provided by the brand, they say “The Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Bourbon is what the rich playboy uncle pours after a day in oil and gas. This bourbon is buttoned-up, full-bodied, and adamant.” Therefore, for all intents and purposes, I think we can assume this is a bourbon.
Tasting Notes – Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Medium dark caramel and brown sugar; vanilla; dark cherries; mildly sweet; tart orange peel; hint of dry oak; alcohol appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Dark cherries, sweet brown sugar simple syrup, moderately sweet, developing black pepper and dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Increasing and lingering black pepper spice; mild caramel; barrel char later on; long; pleasant warmth deep down.
The nose of the Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey is fairly sweet, with medium dark caramel, rich brown sugar and vanilla. Dark cherries are in the background. In addition, there is also tart orange, and just a hint of dry oak. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.
The taste is fairly sweet with dark cherries and brown sugar simple syrup. However, there is fairly rapidly developing black pepper spice and mild dry oak. Those flavors continue into the finish, with the sweetness and caramel fading and the black pepper spice increasing. As time goes on, the long finish remains quite spicy. Towards the end, there’s some barrel char, as well, and pleasant warmth deep down.
Conclusion – Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review
Lasso Motel 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey has classic bourbon flavors with a progression from nose to finish that one would expect for a mature bourbon. Initially, the flavors are quite sweet and rich. However, they quickly evolve into a much spicier finish. Moreover, the lingering spice and smoky barrel char helps get me ready for the next sip. Overall, this whiskey is an enjoyable pour for those who appreciate a classic bourbon flavor profile with a generous dose of black pepper spice. Have you tried this whiskey? What are your thoughts? Cheers!🥃
