The Founder of Lasso Motel Whiskey is Devin Odell
Lasso Motel Whiskey was founded by cocktail spirits industry veteran Devin Odell, President of Dynasty Spirits. Devin wanted to make his mark with his own whiskey brand. Devin went for it! He came out with 13 expressions at once! There are currently 4-, 8- and 18-year old straight whiskeys, a 10-year old barrel strength straight rye, and a large collection of finished bourbons. The finished bourbons include the Le Stave French Oak, Sherry, Rose, Port Cask, Tokaji, Naranja, Cognac, Mizunara, and Amburana. The bottle’s cork tops are a rainbow of colors that reference their cask finish color, for example, the Rose cask finish is cork top is pink.
Lasso Motel Whiskey Was Inspired By The Belmont Hotel
Additional background information comes from the company’s press release: “Lasso Motel Whiskey was inspired by Odell’s time at the storied Belmont Hotel—a now-shuttered but historic Dallas landmark reminiscent of the iconic Chateau Marmont. The hotel, once a vibrant hub for artists and celebrities, offered stunning views of the city. Encapsulated by the rock-and-roll nostalgia and the sense of history that the Belmont represented, Odell’s memories of this place laid the foundation for the timeless essence of Lasso Motel Whiskey.”
The Specifics – Lasso Motel Le Stave Bourbon Review
Lasso Motel Le Stave is distilled at Green River Distilling. The mash bill consists of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley. If you are at all familiar with Green River Distilling bourbons you are no stranger to this mash bill. The base bourbon used for this cask finish expression was aged four years before receiving a secondary finish with the French oak staves for approximately six months. It was bottled in Dallas, Texas. The cork top for this particular bottle is light grey.
Tasting Notes – Lasso Motel Le Stave Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn Glass
👉🏻Nose: Very mild alcohol vapors, subtle tobacco notes, orange, citrus, mead, and white pepper
👉🏻Taste: Classic bourbon notes, light toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, warmed honey flavors, very light baking spice
👉🏻Finish: The finish is reminiscent of a Japanese whisky – light, delicate soft finish; creamy mouthfeel, light, bright floral notes round out the finish
The flavors are present on the nose and in the taste but the presence is very delicate and not overpowering. I would describe the moderate flavor presence as polite so as not to be intrusive. The finish is medium with a nice, subtle warmth. That warmth fades away just a subtlety as it did when it arrived on your palate.
Conclusion
Overall, the Lasso Motel Le Stave feels sophisticated much like the French culture. The bourbon minds its manners providing all the tried and true classic bourbon notes at a proof that is easy to drink. The honey, light baking spice flavors are my favorite aspect of this expression. The French oak staves impart a silky, warm mouthfeel. It makes a great pour that is not offensive in any way thus truly French in its style. Have you tried Lasso Motel Le Stave? What did you think? Have you tried any of the other cask finished expressions by Lasso Motel? Cheers!🥃
