MaltyVerse x Green River Distilling “A Wreck in Kentucky” is a 6-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon crafted from a 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley mash bill, and bottled at 96 proof. Paired with the MaltyVerse’s comic book theme, this limited single barrel release offers light-bodied yet classic bourbon flavors of caramel, honey, and stone fruits with a pleasantly long finish. The Worlds of Premium Spirits and Immersive Storytelling Collide
According to the brand, “The MaltyVerse, from the team behind Barrel Global, invites whisky connoisseurs and storytelling enthusiasts to embark on an unparalleled journey where the worlds of premium spirits and immersive storytelling collide. At the heart of the MaltyVerse is a collection of limited-edition whiskies, each paired with a unique story and comic artwork from illustrator Carl Harrison that elevates the experience of every pour. From Scotland’s storied distilleries to the heart of Kentucky’s bourbon trail, these spirits are handpicked for their rarity, craftsmanship, and ability to transport the drinker into another world.”
“The story of the MaltyVerse is based 100 years in the future where whisky has become a commodity as rare as diamonds and gold. The villains in the MaltyVerse called Drooms are headed by Mr. Neat who are constantly scheming to steal the rare bottles of whisky while the ABV (Agency of Barrel Vigilance) led by Agent W work tirelessly to protect the universe’s most rare liquid. As time goes on, the universe will expand with more characters inspired by other spirits including tequila, mezcal, and rum.”
The Details
The newest MaltyVerse releases called “MaltyVerse Scenes” feature one comic scene per bottle. We are reviewing MaltyVerse x Green River Distillery Bourbon. Green River Distillery’s “A Wreck in Kentucky” is a 6-Year-Old bourbon distilled from a mash bill of 75% Corn 21% Rye and 4% Malted Barley. Interestingly, the mash bill is a little different from Green River’s standard bourbon mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley, so it would be interesting to know the story behind this barrel. This single barrel also yielded a fairly low number of bottles for its age — only 159. That’s at the low end for a 6-year-old bourbon.
Tasting Notes – MaltyVerse x Green River Distilling “A Wreck in Kentucky” Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Fairly light, rye spices, light caramel, light honey, dark cherries; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Rye spices, mildly to moderately sweet, light honey, pale caramel, sweet cherries, sweet dried apricots; fairly light-bodied
👉🏻Finish: Flavors linger, mildly sweet, gradually more dry; mild white pepper spice and mild dry wood; pleasant warmth; fairly long finish for the relatively light mouthfeel.
The nose of A Wreck in Kentucky is fairly light with rye spices, light caramel, light honey and dark cherries. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.
The taste has somewhat similar flavors, being mildly to moderately sweet, with light honey, pale caramel, sweet cherries, sweet dried apricots and pleasant rye spices. The mouthfeel is fairly light-bodied. The flavors continue into the finish, which is mildly sweet, but gradually becomes a bit more dry with mild white pepper spice and mild dry wood at the end. The finish is fairly long for the relatively light mouthfeel.
Conclusion
The MaltyVerse x Green River Distilling “A Wreck in Kentucky” has very pleasant, classic bourbon flavors, albeit with a fairly light character for its proof. It would make a very enjoyable pour for someone looking for this flavor profile. The price is a bit higher than Green River’s own Single Barrel Bourbon, which is bottled at barrel proof and tends to be priced around $70. Presumably, this whiskey is priced a bit higher due to the relatively low barrel yield and other factors. Price aside, I think most bourbon fans would be pleased with this pour.
