Background

MB Roland Distillery was founded in 2009 by Paul & Merry Beth Tomaszewski near Pembroke, KY. Paul had been stationed at nearby Ft. Campbell and Merry Beth had grown up in the area. The distillery lies on an old Amish Dairy farm, which makes for very picturesque surroundings. The old farm buildings serve as homes for the visitor center, rickhouse and distillery.

MB Roland is a grain to glass distillery, using local grains to make their whiskeys. The name Old 2nd District refers to the pre-prohibition tax district that represented Western Kentucky. This is the second Bottled in Bond bourbon released by the distillery. The first being Barker’s Mill.

Tasting Notes MB Roland Old 2nd District Bottled in Bond Bourbon Review!

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass

👉🏻Nose: Quite sweet; honey, corn bread, sweet pears, dark plums; hints of sweet yellow raisins; tart orange citrus; dry oak; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Moderately sweet from simple syrup and pale honey; sweet caramel, light butterscotch, dark berries, dates, tart citrus tang, mild dry wood, mild rye spices and toast
👉🏻Finish: Fairly dry, with slowly developing white pepper spice; mild lingering honey and fruit sweetness and rye spices, too; mild orange peel; dry wood later on; lingering raisin; fairly long; pleasant warmth

The nose of MB Roland Old 2nd District Bottled in Bond Bourbon is fairly complex. It’s relatively sweet, with a variety of fruits, such as sweet pears, dark plums and yellow raisins, as well as sweet cornbread and light honey. However, there is also nicely contrasting tart citrus, rye spices and just a touch of dry oak. The alcohol vapor is as expected for the proof.

The taste is full bodied, and equally complex, with a mix of sweetness, darker fruits, citrus and spice. It is moderately sweet from simple syrup, pale honey, sweet caramel and a touch of light butterscotch. There are full, dark fruits, like dark berries and dates. However, similar to the nose, there is again a nice contrast with a tart citrus tang, as well as mild dry wood, and a background of rye spices, leading with cloves. The finish is fairly dry with a slowly developing white pepper spice. Nonetheless, there is a lingering honey, raisin and fruit sweetness, along with tart orange peel, and rye spices as well. A bit of dry wood becomes more evident later on. The finish is fairly long and I am left with a pleasant warmth.

Bottle and Glencairn Glass - MB Roland Old 2nd District Bottled in Bond Bourbon Review
Summary

I am a fan of pot still bourbon, and this one did not disappoint. It has the kind of full rich flavors that only a pot still can provide. The combination of sweet fruits, dark fruits, syrups and candies with nicely contrasting spices, tart citrus and dry wood makes for a very enjoyable pour. Not to mention, for a bottled in bond bourbon, there’s a lot of flavors packed into that 100 proof. If you are a fan of well made pot still bourbon, then this is one for you! Cheers!🥃
