Finished in Precision Fine Grain Oak Barrels

A New Addition To The Bomberger’s Declaration Line

Bomberger’s Declaration and Shenk’s Homestead comprise Michter’s Legacy Series. Bomberger’s PFG is a brand new addition to the Bomberger’s Declaration line. It is made by taking fully matured Michter’s bourbon and then finishing it in second, new, proprietary toasted and charred, French fine grain oak barrels. These barrels are very unique in that they are made from a blend of French oaks of varying origins. The wood comes from areas such as the Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and Vosges forests. The oak is air dried for a minimum of 40 months, near the Charente River in France, prior to constructing the barrels. Once constructed, those secondary barrels are precisely toasted, before being charred and filled.

After the additional secondary aging, the bourbon undergoes Michter’s signature filtration process, prior to it being bottled at 100.2 proof. As it turns out, all Michter’s whiskeys undergo a filtration process specifically tailed for each particular spirit. That uniquely tailored filtration process, combined with a low barrel entry proof of 103, extended wood seasoning time and toasted barrels all contribute to the character of Michter’s whiskeys. In addition, for Michter’s Bomberger’s PFG, the secondary finishing barrel plays a distinctive role in this bourbon’s flavor, as well.

Tasting Notes – Michter’s Bomberger’s PFG (Precision Fine Grain) Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

🎨I usually don’t discuss the color, but the rich dark amber color of the Bomberger’s PFG Bourbon really stands out.

👉🏻Nose: Dry spicy oak, dark cherries, tart orange peel, toffee, vanilla, sweet brown sugar; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Brown sugar, lightly burnt caramel, hints of sweet fruit, dry spicy oak, mild tannins
👉🏻Finish: Capsaicin spice, lingering brown sugar sweetness, cherries, dry oak and mild char; very long; increasingly dry; pleasant warmth

The nose of Michter’s Bomberger’s PFG (Precision Fine Grain) Bourbon is full and rich, more so than I would have expected from its 100.2 proof. It is fairly sweet, as well. As anticipated, the dry oak from the second barrel is evident, dominant in fact, but not at all overpowering. In addition, it blends well with the other flavors, which include dark cherries, tart orange peel, dark toffee, vanilla and brown sugar. While all the flavors are full, the oak does stand out. Although, with progressive sips, the toffee and vanilla come forward. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.

The taste is also full, with brown sugar, lightly burnt caramel, hints of sweet fruit, mild tannins and dry spicy oak. The oak continues into the finish, along with lingering brown sugar sweetness and cherries. However, there is growing capsaicin spice, and the finish become progressively more dry. Dry oak and mild barrel char linger into the very long finish, and I am left with a deep down warmth.

Bomberger’s PFG Is Different Than Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Whiskeys

I did not know exactly what to expect from this bourbon, other than I am a fan of the Bomberger’s line, I understand that the folks at Michter’s know a thing or two about barrels, and they can get much more full flavors out of 100 proof than the majority of the distilleries out there. Not surprisingly, Michter’s Bomberger’s PFG Bourbon is another winner. However, it is definitely for fans of drier, spicier oak, rather than the flavors found in their Toasted Barrel Finish series of whiskeys, or any of their other whiskeys, for that matter. This is pretty much a polar opposite the Toasted Bourbon, bringing out spicier and drier flavors from the barrel. However, there is still a richness to this bourbon, with plenty of confectionary notes, particularly in the nose.

Summary – Michter’s Bomberger’s PFG (Precision Fine Grain) Bourbon Review

Michter’s Bomberger’s PFG Bourbon is a full flavored, rich bourbon which is complimented by dry spicy oak. This all adds up to quite a delicious pour. In fact, it’s right in my wheelhouse, as they say. If you’re a fan of this type of oak flavor as well, and enjoy a full bodied rich pour, then this bourbon is one that you’ll want to try. Just note that it is a bit of a different flavor profile for Michter’s, so you’ll have to approach it as something new. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
