A Blend of Kentucky and Texas Distillates
Milam & Greene, based in Blanco, Texas, created Liberty as the brand’s first American Whiskey. Released to honor the country’s 250th anniversary, Liberty’s $76 price is a nod to the year the United States declared its independence. Liberty blends pot-distilled Texas whiskey with column-distilled Kentucky whiskey, aged in once-used Texas bourbon casks. Although made from Milam & Greene’s classic bourbon mash bill, aging in used casks makes it an American Whiskey rather than a bourbon.

Tasting Notes – Milam & Greene Liberty American Whiskey Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Pears, caramel, pale honey, light citrus, subtle sweet floral notes; alcohol vapor noticeable but appropriate for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Moderately sweet, honey, sweet raspberries, sweet pears, tart lime citrus, light caramel, mild dry oak
👉🏻 Finish: Lingering citrus and fading sweetness; caramel, growing and lasting black pepper spice; later on, drier with tannins; mild dry spicy oak and char towards the end; long with a deep warmth
Bright Fruit, Citrus, and Lingering Spice
The nose of Milam & Greene Liberty American Whiskey is bright and sweet, with light fruits such as pears, along with mild citrus. Caramel, honey, and subtle sweet floral notes are present as well. The palate is moderately sweet, with honey, light caramel, sweet pears, and sweet raspberry compote. Tart lime citrus adds a pleasant contrast to the sweeter flavors. Mild dry oak is present as well. Many of those flavors continue into the finish, joined by growing black pepper spice and developing dryness, along with tannins, mild dry spicy oak, and char later on.
A Unique Take On American Whiskey
As its name would indicate, Liberty American Whiskey is not a bourbon. It has the lighter and sweeter flavors of a spirit aged in a used barrel, along with a somewhat lighter body. But do not fear, as the underlying high proof provides plenty of intensity behind those flavors. Milam & Greene Liberty American Whiskey has characteristics reminiscent of both a light whiskey and an Irish whiskey, and I find the combination to be quite enjoyable. If you enjoy those flavors as well, you’ll want to give this whiskey a try!
