Minden Mill Nevada Straight Bourbon Review

Minden Mill Nevada Straight Bourbon Whiskey is crafted from a four grain mash bill using 100% estate grown 60% Earthtone Heirloom corn, 20% Rye, 10% Barley, 10% Oats. Aged for four years, it has classic bourbon flavors, with just the right amount of dry oak, fruit and spice. It's a very enjoyable pour, which I think will please most bourbon fans.

Minden Mill Distilling, located in Minden, Nevada, within the Carson Valley, is a true “ground to glass” distillery. Currently under the ownership of Foley Family Wines, the distillery is guided by Joe O’Sullivan as its Master Distiller. Prior to this, the distillery operated from 2019-2022 under the name Bently Heritage Estate Distillery, which ceased operations in March 2022. It reopened as Minden Mill Distillery in 2023.

As a member of the Estate Whiskey Alliance, Minden Mill uses estate grown grains and water sourced from their onsite well which is fed by snowpack from the Sierra Nevadas. Distillation takes place in a state-of-the-art Christian CARL hybrid still. Furthermore, all Minden Mill whiskeys are aged in climate controlled rickhouses tied to specific weather stations in whiskey regions that inspired the distiller. For the Minden Mill Bourbon, that weather station is in Nelson County, KY.

The Specifics
  • Mash Bill: 60% Earthtone Heirloom corn, 20% Rye, 10% Barley, 10% Oats
  • 100% Estate Grown Grains
  • Maturation: Four years in new #3 char American and French Oak
  • Non-Chill Filtered
Tasting Notes – Minden Mill Nevada Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Brown sugar and maple syrup, dark caramel, dry oak, raspberry jam, touch of cinnamon; intermittent dark cherries; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Fairly sweet, simple syrup, brown sugar, raspberry jam, sweet caramel, mild rye spices; dry wood
👉🏻Finish: Building, fairly intense capsaicin spice; hints of anise and fruit; increasingly dry; dry wood; long; deep warmth

The nose of Minden Mill Bourbon has sweetness from brown sugar, maple syrup, and raspberry jam. In addition, there is dark caramel, just the right amount of dry oak, and a touch of cinnamon, with dark cherries that come and go. The alcohol vapor is as expected for the proof. Interestingly, with subsequent sips, the oak, which was relatively mild initially, becomes increasingly noticeable.

The taste is moderately sweet, which is a bit of a surprise, as it is of a greater intensity than in the nose. The sweetness comes from simple syrup, brown sugar, raspberry jam and sweet caramel, too. There are also mild rye spices and dry wood.

Capsaicin spice appears and rapidly continues to rise and persist throughout the long finish. There are hints of anise, as well. The mouthfeel grows increasingly dry, with dry wood, lasting spice, and lingering hints of anise and fruit. Those flavors last for quite a long time, with an accompanying deep warmth.

Summary

Minden Mill Nevada Straight Bourbon Whiskey has classic bourbon flavors, with just the right amount of dry oak, fruit and spice. The rising sweetness in the taste, and spice and dryness in the finish, provide a nice contrasting complexity. For a four year old 94 proof bourbon, I am surprised how long these flavors linger, yet they do. Overall, this is a very enjoyable pour, which I think will please most bourbon fans. Have you tried Minden Mill Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
