Flagship Showcases River Aging At Its Best

O.H. Ingram’s Flagship Bourbon is an annual limited release created to showcase their finest barrels and their river aging process known as Mellowed on the Mississippi. Every vintage of Flagship is a unique blend personally crafted by Ingram’s Master Blender Scott Beyer. This release, Batch 5, marks the fifth annual edition of Flagship Bourbon and is meant to represent the distillery’s river-aged character at its best.

Ingram’s unique aging process uses floating barrelhouses on the Mississippi River, where the bourbon matures while exposed to the river’s humidity, temperature shifts, and constant motion.

“Every Flagship release is unique, with its own character and flavor produced by our river aging process,” said Founder and Proprietor Hank Ingram. “This year, we selected and blended from just eight barrels to produce what we believe is a truly extraordinary bourbon.”

Tasting Notes – O.H. Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 5 Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻 Nose: Fairly dry with mild dry oak at first; dark cherries; recently emptied, dark red wine barrels; mildly sweet toffee increases with time; hints of tangerines later on; the alcohol vapor is noticeable, but appropriate for the proof.
👉🏻 Taste: Moderate simple syrup sweetness; mild dry oak; dark cherries; toffee.
👉🏻 Finish: Sweetness, dark cherries and toffee linger and slowly diminish; increasingly dry with mild tannins, char and white pepper spice. Long with lingering mild spice and char, but yet there is lingering sweetness, too.

Summary

The nose of O.H. Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 5 has quite a bit of depth and layers. It is somewhat dry and slightly oaky at first, but soon after dark cherries appear, along with a mild sweetness. Still later, confectionary flavors develop, mainly a mildly sweet, rich toffee. There are also subtle background notes of recently emptied dark red wine barrels. As the sip goes on, the flavors all unite to give a robust and enjoyable potpourri of flavors.

The taste is surprisingly sweet, given the initially fairly dry nose. Many of the flavors from the nose continue into the palate, before turning fairly dry and spicy in the long finish. Yet, some sweetness and dark cherries linger on, as well.

Conclusion – O.H. Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 5 Review

O.H. Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 5 is a very complex and layered pour. What stands out most to me are the layers of flavors that develop in the nose after a relatively dry start. That complexity continues into the remainder of the pour, with the taste sweeter than expected and the finish more dry. Yet, while the finish is dry, it somehow also has lingering sweetness and dark cherries, as well. I am very much enjoying this bourbon. If you are a fan of a complex layered pour, then O.H. Ingram Flagship Batch 5 Bourbon is one that you’ll want to give a try. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
