Background

Oceanside Distillery was started by two brothers, back in 2018. It is located in Cape Canaveral, on Florida’s Space Coast, where they make bourbon, gin, rum and a rye. There is also a craft cocktail bar on site, with small bites available, as well.

Odysea Wheated Bourbon

I have previously reviewed Oceanside’s Odysea “Rye” Bourbon. That bourbon was distilled in-house at Oceanside Distillery and was made from Florida corn. Conversely, the subject of this review, the Odysea Wheated Bourbon, was sourced from a Kentucky distillery. Other than that, its exact origins are not clear. It was made from a mash bill of 51% Corn, 45% wheat and 4% malted barley. To further develop the bourbon’s flavors, after it matured in its original barrels, the folks at at Oceanside Distillery re-barreled it new toasted oak barrels, where it remained for a few months.

Tasting Notes – Oceanside Odysea Wheated Bourbon

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Juicy fruit gum with added sweet raisins; brown sugar; mildly burnt caramel; alcohol vapor appropriate for proof
👉🏻Taste: Sweet caramel, brown sugar; dark red wine like character; hint of prunes; white pepper spice later on
👉🏻Finish: Lingering dark red wine, with mild white pepper spice; mild dry oak and char at the end; fairly long; moderate warmth

Oceanside Odysea Wheated Bourbon has a nice blend of fruit flavors, sweet and burnt caramels, brown sugar and red wine notes, with a bit of white pepper spice at the end. The flavors all go very well together, making for a full flavored pour. There is also soothing warmth in the finish, which would be quite pleasant on a cool day.

Red Wine?

The red wine flavors are a bit perplexing. I have tasted this bourbon on three separate occasions, and have noticed those flavors each time, most notably in the taste and finish. The distillery tells me that no red wine barrels were used while this bourbon was at Oceanside Distillery. However, as this bourbon was sourced, possibly they were used somewhere earlier in its aging. I have never tasted similar flavors in a bourbon that had not spent time in red wine barrels of some sort, so if they were not used, it is an enigma. Nevertheless, some unusual flavors can develop in unfinished bourbons, so anything is possible. Regardless of whether this bourbon is finished or unfinished, I find it to be a very enjoyable pour.

Conclusion

Although the flavors of Odysea Wheated Bourbon are a bit perplexing, if you are a fan of red wine overtones, you will likely enjoy this bourbon. Have you tried any of Oceanside’s bourbons? What did you think? Have you ever gotten red wine notes from a bourbon that was not finished in red wine barrels? I would be very interested to know. Cheers!🥃
