First Released in 2018

I have to admit, I’m a little biased when it comes to the modern day Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond decanters. I have been a big fan of them ever since the first one of the current series was released in 2018. According to the original press release, the series was supposed to go on for 5 years. Every year there was to be a Spring (green label) and a Fall (black label) release. That first year, there was also a 14 year VVS (Very Very Special – maroon label)) gift shop only release. There have since been two more VVS editions, one in 2020 and most recently, earlier this year, in 2024.

“But wait!”, I can hear the mathematicians out there proclaiming. “If the series was meant to last 5 years, shouldn’t it have ended with the iconic 19 year old Fall 2022 release?” Well, yes. However, I am told that due to the popularity of the series, Max Shapira, the company’s current Executive Chairman, decided to continue it indefinitely.

Spring 2024 Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond 10 Year Bourbon

This latest release, at 10 years old, is towards the younger end of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond Bourbon spectrum. The bourbons in the series have so far ranged in age from 8 years old (Spring 2021 & Fall 2023), all the way up to 19 years old (Fall 2022). Coincidentally, the Spring 2023 release was also 10 years old. That makes me wonder if we’ll see future bourbons with ages closer to the younger end of the spectrum.

Mash Bill

68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley. That’s Heaven Hill’s standard wheated bourbon mash bill, which is the same mash bill that is used for Larceny Bourbon.

Anyway, by now, you’re probably wondering, what’s it like?

Tasting Notes – Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond 10 Year Spring 2024 Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet cherry, vanilla, rich caramel, brown sugar, pears, oak and cedar; butterscotch; alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, light oak, subtle sweet cherries, mild tannins and mild black pepper
👉🏻Finish: Black pepper increases, mild lingering sweetness; light dry oak; some tannins; mild char later on; fairly long with a pleasant warmth

The nose brings sweet cherries, followed shortly by pears, which are then joined by cedar and light oak. Those aromas are all on a background of rich caramel, vanilla and brown sugar. The caramel note changes to more of a rich butterscotch after a couple of sips. The taste is fairly sweet, with brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, mild cherry and oak. Subtle tannins and black pepper appear later on. The black pepper spice increases in the finish, which becomes more dry with light dry oak and tannins. There is also some added char later on. The finish has a light to moderate intensity, but it lingers for quite some time, with a pleasant warmth.

Conclusion – Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond 10 Year Spring 2024 Bourbon Review

Because of the age range of the Old Fitzgerald releases, one might be inclined to think of this 10 year old bourbon as fairly young. However, a 10 year old bourbon is still far from young. This bourbon definitely has some mature flavors, but everything remains in balance. If you are a fan of this series, as I am, or just a fan of older wheated bourbons, then you’ll want to give the Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond 10 Year Spring 2024 release a try. However, Old Fitzgerald decanters are always in very high demand, so this might not be the easiest bourbon to find. Nonetheless, if you do manage to track one down (hopefully at not much more than MSRP), I think you’ll feel it was worth the hunt! Cheers!🥃
