Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9-Year-Old Bourbon Review

The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9-Year-Old Bourbon is the 15th release in Heaven Hill’s elegant decanter series. Featuring a balanced profile with classic bourbon flavors including dark cherries, light caramel, tart citrus, dry oak, and some spice in the finish, this release has a slightly lighter body than many of the prior releases. Nevertheless, it is quite an enjoyable pour.

The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter Series

The Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter series is one of my favorite whiskeys from Heaven Hill Distillery. The series commenced in the spring of 2018 with an 11-year-old bourbon, bottled in the same beautiful crystal decanter that is used for all of the releases. Since its inception, there have been two regular releases per year, in the spring and fall. The spring release bears a green label and the fall release bears a black label. Occasionally there is a third release in a year, the VVS (Very Very Special) edition, which bears a maroon label. The bourbons have so far ranged in age from 8 to 19 years old.

The Specifics

All of the Old Fitzgerald Decanter Series Bourbons are made from Heaven Hill’s wheated bourbon mash bill, the same one used for the Larceny line of bourbons.

Produced: Spring 2016
Bottled: Spring 2025
Mash Bill: 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted barley
Proof: 100

Tasting Notes- Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9-Year-Old Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet dark cherries, tan caramel, simple syrup, dry oak, tart orange citrus; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Mild simple syrup sweetness, light caramel, light dry oak, mild tannins, hint of dark cherries and tart orange
👉🏻Finish: Increasingly dry, white pepper spice, subtle simple syrup, mild tannins, dry wood later on; hint of tart orange; long and lingering; deep warmth

The nose of Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9-Year-Old Bourbon has sweet dark cherries, mild simple syrup sweetness, tan caramel, mild tart orange citrus and a very pleasant amount of dry oak. The taste has a medium body with a mild simple syrup sweetness, light caramel and a hint of dark cherries and tart orange citrus. There are mild tannins, and dry oak, as well. White pepper spice grows into the long and increasingly dry finish, but never becomes overbearing. There is also a mild lingering simple syrup sweetness, as well as mild tannins and tart orange citrus. Later on, there is a bit of dry wood. In the end, I am left with a pleasant deep warmth, but a bit of a surprising dryness in my mouth.

Summary

Old Fitzgerald Bottled-In-Bond Spring 2025 9-Year-Old Bourbon has classic bourbon flavors, as has been the case for the series. The amount of dry oak in the nose is just the right amount; I know that it is there, but it is not overbearing. It always seems to me that there is a bit more oak than I would expect in the younger Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Bourbons. Maybe it is the barrel selection process, or maybe it is where these barrels age that has that effect, or it has something to do with the characteristics of the wheated bourbon itself. Regardless, that is something that I have come to expect in them.

I’ve been a fan of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond decanter line since its revival, and this one is no exception. Its body seems a little lighter to me than past renditions, but it is nonetheless a very enjoyable pour. Are you a fan of the Old Fitzgerald decanter series, too? Cheers!🥃
