Old Steelhouse Distillery History
The T.W. Samuels Distillery originally started in 1844, then closed during prohibition, and then was rebuilt nearby in 1933. That is the site of the current Old Steelhouse Distillery. T.W. Samuels distilled there until 1952, and subsequently the distillery was used as the Samuels Springs Water Co, producing bottled water. The grounds are now being restored and being turned into the new Old Steelhouse Distillery (originally named the Old Samuels Distillery). There are also functioning rickhouses on the site which are owned by Maker’s Mark and Heaven Hill, and are being used to age their whiskeys. We had a chance to visit the distillery a number of years ago, and you can read all about it in our Old Steelhouse Distillery Tour Review.
The Specifics – Old Steelhouse Blueprint Series Batch 002 Bourbon Review
This bourbon is the second release in the Old Steehouse Blueprint Series. The inaugural Old Steelhouse Blueprint Bourbon was distilled in Indiana (read our review). However, Batch 002 is distilled in Kentucky.
Mash Bill: 64% corn, 24% wheat, 12% malted barley
Aged: 5 Years
Source: Undisclosed, but that is the same mash bill that Wilderness Trail uses for their wheated bourbon…
Tasting Notes – Old Steelhouse Blueprint Series Batch 002 Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Dark stone fruits like plums, canned peaches in sweet syrup, sweet light butterscotch, mild hot cinnamon, subtle baking spices, hints of tart orange citrus; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Moderately sweet light butterscotch, light honey, sweet cherry, hint of tart orange citrus, mild dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Moderate white pepper spice; mild dry oak; tart orange citrus; increasingly dry, with subtle barrel char at the end; long with a pleasant warmth
The nose is fairly sweet, with butterscotch, dark stone fruits, like plums, and occasionally hints of canned peaches in sweet syrup. Mild hot cinnamon, subtle baking spices and tart orange citrus gradually become more noticeable, and are a nice complement. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.
The taste is moderately sweet with light butterscotch and honey, and some sweet cherries, as well. Later on, tart orange citrus and mild dry oak become evident. The tart orange citrus lingers on into the finish, where it is joined by increasing white pepper spice. However, the spice is moderate in degree and never becomes overpowering. These flavors continue on, but the mouthfeel becomes increasingly dry, with mild dry oak, and subtle barrel char, at the end. The finish is long, leaving me with a pleasant warmth.
Summary
Overall, Old Steelhouse Blueprint Series Batch 002 Bourbon is a very enjoyable pour. It has a nice mix of full flavors, and just the right amount of complexity. The fairly high percentage of wheat adds body, and probably some of the baking spices and fruit. Even though this bourbon uses the same mash bill as Wilderness Trail Wheated Bourbon, the flavors are quite different than that distillery’s offering.
If you enjoy a bourbon that starts off with sweeter flavors and fruit notes, which continue into the taste but become drier and spicier in the finish, you’ll want to give Old Steelhouse Blueprint Series Batch 2 Bourbon a try! Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
