What is a Pinhook True Small Batch?

Pinhook Bourbon Heist High Proof Bourbon has been my favorite Pinhook Bourbon release to date. Therefore, when I saw this Justins’ House of Bourbon Pinhook Bourbon Heist True Small Batch, I knew I had to have it.

“Pinhook True Small Batch – what is that?” you are probably saying to yourself. Well, according to Pinhook: “Pinhook “True Small Batch” showcases our unique blending and proofing philosophy through specially commissioned microblends of three barrels of our custom mashbill. This bespoke small-scale blend results in a deep, complex whiskey greater than the sum of its parts.” That certainly sounds great, doesn’t it?

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛌 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉Nose: Brown sugar, rye seeds and rye spice, dark plum, cherry and a hint of orange citrus; caramel, light oak, subtle leather and cinnamon; noticeable alcohol
👉Taste: Brown sugar, syrupy, caramel, cherry, oak
👉Finish: Sweetness and fruit linger, but are overshadowed by building capsaicin spice with a bit of char and oak; long finish with a moderate burn

Pinhook True Small Batch Brings Bourbon Heist to the Next Level

This True Small Batch brings Bourbon Heist to the next level. There is the same dominant brown sugar syrupy sweetness, and similar noticeable alcohol on the nose. However, the fruit notes are bit different, more in the line of stone fruits like plums and cherries, but with a hint of orange citrus as well. Of course, there is some caramel, too. The subtle leather and noticeable oak may come from the slightly higher age, but yet some cinnamon remains. Finally, there is a rising spiciness with some char and oak gaining dominance into the long finish.

Conclusion

This Pinhook True Small Batch bourbon has a little more age on it than the standard release, being “more than 4 years” rather than “more than 3 years”. Presumably, that explains some of the flavors. Either way, it is a great take on what already was one of my favorite bourbons. What’s your favorite Pinhook? Cheers!🥃
