The RD1 Distillery is named after the Ashland Distillery, which was the first federally registered distillery in Lexington, Kentucky. Therefore, it was assigned the designation “RD#1”, meaning Registered Distillery #1. Back in Pre-Prohibition times, each state was divided into multiple tax districts, which had their own numbering. The original Ashland Distillery, which later became the Wm. Tarr & Co Distillery, was located in Kentucky’s District 7.

The RD ONE 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon Process
From RD1 Spirits: Crafted by a legacy Kentucky distillery, this Kentucky Straight Bourbon aged for more than 10 years before being introduced to Amburana Wood staves. The finishing time – intentionally less than that of our four-year Amburana Bourbon – brought out the best of the decade-old Bourbon and the Brazilian oak. This beautiful mingling resulted in a well balanced, complex masterpiece, worthy of its allocation.
Tasting Notes – RD ONE 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn
👉🏻Nose: Sweet hot cinnamon syrup, hints of smoke, toasted walnuts, mild oak; sweet caramel and vanilla background.; alcohol vapor noticeable but appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Simple syrup, cinnamon, caramel, dry oak
👉🏻Finish: Cinnamon with increasing spice, dry oak and mild char; long; pleasant warmth
While the amburana notes in RD1 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon are not at all overbearing, there is no mistaking their presence throughout. The nose has sweet hot cinnamon syrup with toasted walnuts and hints of smoke and oak. As I acclimate to amburana’s flavors, sweet light caramel and vanilla become more noticeable with each sip.
The taste leads off with hot cinnamon and simple syrup sweetness, with some light caramel, too. As time goes on, the cinnamon becomes progressively more spicy, and lingers through the long finish. Later on, the mouthfeel becomes increasingly dry, with dry oak and char becoming more noticeable. There a pleasant deep warmth with the hot cinnamon spice, char and dry oak lasting for quite a long time.
Amburana is a Polarizing Finish
Amburana is a very polarizing flavor. People seem to feel quite strongly about it, either one way or the other. In fact, I am actually not sure if there is any middle ground. Personally, I enjoy the flavors of amburana, but in moderation, and only occasionally. I think most people who like it feel the same way. I enjoy the four plus year old RD ONE Amburana Finished Bourbon that is part of their regular line up, however, I felt it was quite a bold move to finish a 10 year old bourbon with it.
Summary – RD ONE 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon
I am happy to report, RD1’s 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon is very well done. Bear in mind, though, that amburana has characteristic very strong flavors, and I think if even just a molecule of it gets into a bottle, we’d all know that it was there. However, it is about as subtle as it can be in this bourbon, allowing some of the older bourbon flavors to shine through, particularly after a sip or two. In fact, the sweet hot cinnamon that it brings is a nice complement to the classic bourbon flavors. I am quite enjoying drinking it.
Conclusion – RD ONE 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon
If you enjoy the flavors that amburana imparts, and were wondering how they would meld with a well-aged Kentucky bourbon, then you’ll want to give RD ONE 10 Year Amburana Finished Bourbon a try. Bear in mind, though, that this is a limited release, and is priced accordingly. So, you might want to try it at the distillery or in a bar prior to purchasing a bottle. Nonetheless, as with RD1’s four year-old Amburana Finished Bourbon, it is as balanced a finished bourbon as Amburana will allow. Therefore, if you are an amburana fan, this bourbon would make a nice addition to your collection.
