Star Trek Spirits, the official spirits brand of the Star Trek franchise, collaborated with Stellum Spirits (Part of the Barrell Craft Spirits brands) to create two whiskeys: Romulan Stellum Spirits Cask Strength Whiskey and Romulan Stellum Spirits Rye Whiskey.

The Specifics

Star Trek Spirits Cask Strength Whiskey is blended by the Stellum Spirits team from whiskeys aged 5 to 11 years. The whiskeys were distilled at undisclosed distilleries in Kentucky and made from a (?composite) mash bill of 79% Corn, 18% Rye and 3% Malted Barley. It has an Oloroso Finish. Star Trek Cask Strength Whiskey is bottled in Romulan Ale bottles and is available online at startrekspirits.com. So, what’s this cask strength whiskey like?

Tasting Notes – Star Trek Spirits Romulan Stellum Cask Strength Whiskey Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Tart orange citrus; hints of pears; subtle cloves; mildly-moderately sweet; pale toffee; lightly burnt caramel; alcohol vapor appropriate for the relatively high proof
👉🏻Taste: Moderately sweet with medium dark honey and caramel; tart orange citrus; white pepper late; mild cloves
👉🏻Finish: Lingering sweetness, growing white pepper spice, tart lime, mild wood and barrel char later on; long, increasingly dry, finish; lingering dry wood, spice and cloves

The nose of Star Trek Spirits Romulan Stellum Cask Strength Whiskey begins with tart orange citrus and mild sweetness. As it opens, pale toffee and hints of sweet pear emerge. Over time, the citrus fades, the sweetness deepens, and the toffee grows richer, leading to a touch of lightly burnt caramel. Subtle rye spices, like cloves, develop in the background. The alcohol vapor is noticeable but appropriate for the proof.

The taste follows a similar arc. Tart orange citrus is present from the start, along with medium-dark honey and caramel. With successive sips, the sweetness intensifies, and white pepper spice builds. Mild rye spices, primarily cloves, provide a consistent backdrop.

The finish lingers with sweetness and rye spice that gradually give way to a growing dryness. White pepper intensifies, joined by dry wood and a touch of barrel char. It’s a long, warming finish, leaving notes of spice, cloves, and dry oak that persist on my tongue.

Conclusion

Star Trek Spirits Romulan Stellum Cask Strength Whiskey is a fairly complex whiskey, with flavors that evolve over progressive sips. While it shares some similarities with the brand’s Romulan Rye, this cask strength whiskey is a distinct expression. It offers an intriguing combination of confectionary richness, tart citrus, and spice. Like the rye, this is a bold, high-proof pour, which makes it an interesting choice for a spirit made to appeal to Star Trek fans—especially considering that many whiskey drinkers, Trekkies included, tend to prefer lower proof options. So, it’s possible some fans may purchase it mainly for the eye-catching Romulan Ale bottle, without much concern for what’s inside. That said, if you do crack it open—whether you’re a Trekkie or not—those who enjoy full-bodied, high-octane whiskey should find plenty to like. Cheers! 🥃
