Romulan Rye by Star Trek Spirits and Stellum Spirits Review

Star Trek Spirits Romulan Rye is a bold, cask strength whiskey blended by Stellum Spirits and bottled in an eye-catching Romulan Ale-style bottle. It delivers a citrus-forward flavor profile with a balance of sweetness, spice, and dry oak. With its high proof and bold character, this rye is best suited to whiskey drinkers who enjoy higher-proof pours. Star Trek fans may be drawn in by the collectible packaging, but those accustomed to barrel-strength whiskey will find the liquid inside equally worth exploring. Star Trek Spirits, the official spirits brand of the Star Trek franchise, collaborated with Stellum Spirits (Part of the Barrell Craft Spirits brands) to create two whiskeys: Romulan Stellum Spirits Cask Strength Whiskey and Romulan Stellum Spirits Rye Whiskey.

The Specifics

Star Trek Spirits Romulan Rye Whiskey is blended by the Stellum Spirits team from ryes aged 5 years 5 months to 7 years. The ryes were made from a (?composite) mash bill of 82% Rye, 14% Corn and 4% Malted Barley, and distilled in Kentucky. The distillery/distilleries of origin is/are not disclosed. Star Trek Rye is bottled in Romulan Ale bottles. Both whiskeys, and others from the collection, are available online at startrekspirits.com.

So, what’s this high proof rye, that’s gone boldly where no rye has gone before, like?

Tasting Notes – Star Trek Spirits Romulan Stellum Rye Whiskey Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet orange and tart lime citrus, relatively mild rye spices, like cloves; hints of rye bread; subtle dark cherries; cedar and brown sugar, later on; alcohol appropriate for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Tart lime citrus, brown sugar sweetness, mild rye spices
👉🏻Finish: White pepper spice; increasingly dry; tart limes, mild rye spices; mild dry wood and char later on; long; deep warmth

The nose of Star Trek Spirits Romulan Stellum Rye Whiskey is quite citrus forward, with tart limes, but some sweet oranges, too. In the background are just a bit of dark cherries. There are relatively mild rye spices, like cloves, with hints of rye bread, as well. Later on, cedar, and also some brown sugar, become evident. The alcohol vapor is appropriate for the fairly high proof.

Tart lime citrus and mild rye spices continue into the taste, joined by brown sugar sweetness. The finish brings steadily building white pepper spice as the mouthfeel grows drier. Mild rye spices and tart limes linger, with hints of dry wood and a touch of barrel char at the end. The finish is long, with a deep warmth.

This is one of those ryes with prominent citrus notes — something I personally enjoy. The rye spices are fairly subtle, and many of the same flavors carry through from nose to finish. What changes most over the course of the sip is the mouthfeel; it starts off sweet but gradually dries out. Interestingly, the white pepper spice that builds in the finish is absent on the nose and doesn’t appear on the palate until later on. Nonetheless, it all adds up to quite an enjoyable pour.

Summary

We have to assume that Star Trek Spirits Romulan Stellum Rye Whiskey was created with Star Trek fans in mind. However, given the fairly high proof and bold flavors of both the cask strength whiskey and rye, the choices made are a bit perplexing. Those characteristics will likely give the whiskey a fairly narrow appeal, and it may only be appreciated by Trekkies (or their friends) who are used to drinking higher-octane spirits. That said, I’m sure many will buy it for the packaging alone — especially at a reasonable $80 price point. If either of those descriptions fits you, you’ll want to grab one before it’s gone! At the very least, you’ll end up with a really cool bottle. Cheers! 🥃
