Sampling of Bardstown Bourbon Company’s New Barrel Finished Bourbons (September 2019)

I sampled Bardstown Bourbon Company's newest barrel finished bourbons. They are finished in Copper & Kings Muscat Mistelle and Apple Brandy barrels, and in Goodwood Brewing's Brandy Barrel Honey Ale casks.

I have been really enjoying what Bardstown Bourbon Company has been producing. So when I heard about their 3 new finished bourbons, I had to head right over and try them. 2 are finished in Copper & Kings barrels, and 1 in a Goodwood Brewery barrel. The Mistelle barrel finished one is available in very limited quantities, so expect to pay a premium if you include this one in your tasting. I was at the bar, where it’s $50 for a 1 ounce pour of the Mistelle finished, and $15 for a one ounce pour of each of the others. It would be roughly half that price if you did 1/2 ounce pours at the tasting bar.

Copper& Kings (Red Label)
11-year-old Indiana bourbon finished in apple brandy barrels for 20 months.
The apple brandy really compliments the complex bourbon without dominating it.
This was my hands down favorite and I bought a bottle. $125/bottle.

Goodwood (Orange Label)
11-year-old bourbon finished in Goodwood Brewing Brandy Barrel Honey Ale casks for 18 months.
The honey nose and flavor is definitely there in this one, but it does blend nicely with the bourbon without dominating it.

Copper & Kings (Purple Label)
10-year-old bourbon finished first for 18 months in Copper & Kings Muscat Mistelle barrels, and then re-barreled for an additional finish in new, freshly charred American oak casks for 19 months.
A lot of work and extra aging go into this one, and there is only 1 barrel which yielded 79 bottles. Hence the price.
This one is somewhat dominated by the Mistelle, with sweetness and red wine/brandy throughout. I would have liked the bourbon to come through more, and thankfully for my wallet, this was my least favorite of the bunch. In all fairness, though, I am generally not a fan of wine finished bourbons, so if that’s something you like, this may be one that you’ll love.

Thanks Randi and Kiki! Cheers!
