Introduction

The American Prohibition Museum, located in Savannah, Georgia, is the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of Prohibition. This fascinating museum delves into the era of the 18th Amendment, when the production and sale of alcohol were outlawed in the United States from 1920 to 1933. Through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and immersive displays, visitors can experience the social and cultural impact of this unfortunate period.

Museum Overview

The American Prohibition Museum explores the rise of the Temperance movement, the political battles that led to Prohibition, and the unintended consequences of the law. Visitors can learn about the role of organized crime, the emergence of speakeasies, and the lives of those who defied the law. The museum also features a replica speakeasy. Here, visitors can enjoy period-inspired cocktails and step back in time to the Roaring Twenties.

Museum Highlights

The American Prohibition Museum features multiple galleries, a street scene with protesters, a moonshining exhibit, over 200 historic items including anti-alcohol posters and other artifacts, 4 vintage automobiles, a speakeasy, and much more. We first followed the evolution of the Temperance movement, and learned about many of the key people and groups involved. Next, we learned about the unintended consequences of Prohibition. These were many, and included lost tax revenue, lost jobs (not only in the alcoholic beverage industry, but also in many related industries) and the rise of bootlegging and organized crime. We learned about the novel ways people devised to sell alcohol, such as the Blind Pig, the origins of NASCAR, medicinal whiskey, flappers and speakeasies. Finally, we saw the downfall of Prohibition and the change of heart of many women who eventually joined the Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform.

Conclusion

We very much enjoyed our visit to the American Prohibition Museum in Savannah, GA. The information provided about the factors and events leading up to Prohibition, and about Prohibition itself, was excellent. However, we would have liked to have learned a bit more about the end of Prohibition, as the coverage of that topic was a bit cursory. Nonetheless, a visit to the museum is definitely highly recommended for anyone interested in learning about that interesting time in American history. Cheers!🥃
