About Union Horse Distilling

Union Horse Distilling is a family owned “grain to glass” distillery in the Kansas City area (Lenexa, KS). They use midwestern grains, distill on a 500 gallon copper hybrid column-pot still, and produce their whiskey in small batches.

Two Union Horse Ryes In The Lineup

Union Horse has two ryes in their regular line up: Reunion Rye and Reunion Barrel Strength Rye. Both are made similarly, although their tastes are quite different. They are made from a mash bill of 100% rye, enter the barrel at 110 proof, and are aged at least 5 years in new Missouri oak. On paper, the only difference between these two ryes would be their proof, but I suspect there is more to it than that. These are small batch ryes. So, given their differing flavor profiles, barrel selection almost certainly has also played a role. In this review, we will focus on the 93 proof Union Horse Reunion Rye.

Tasting Notes – Union Horse Reunion Rye

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Mildly sweet; dried apricot and green delicious apples; light cedar; orange peel; caramel; light rye spices; alcohol is present, but mild
👉🏻Taste: Fairly subtle rye spices, hints of black tea; mild dry oak, beginnings of white pepper spice; hint of apples and peaches; mildly sweet
👉🏻Finish: Building white pepper spice that lingers for a long time; mild barrel char, more evident later on; some dry oak continues, too; peaches in the background; long finish; moderate burn

The fruit flavors are evident in the nose, with only vague hints that this is a rye. However, once I take a sip, the rye notes become more evident. There is also developing white pepper spiciness along with the lingering fruit. Spice grows in the finish, with some barrel char becoming noticeable later on. Subtle peaches in the background are a mystery, although they are nonetheless, quite enjoyable.

Conclusion – Union Horse Reunion Rye Review

The 93 proof Union Horse Reunion Rye is the perfect rye for those who don’t love ryes with “in your face” rye spices. In fact, Reunion Rye is pretty much the polar opposite, and that makes it quite enjoyable and easy to drink. Even so, the fruit notes up front, with spice in the finish, give it a nice complexity. I am really enjoying sipping on this rye, and I think you will, too! Cheers!🥃
