Weekly Whiskey & Bourbon News – February 9, 2024

We’ll start off with some follow up from prior newsletters, then move on to the whiskey and bourbon news for the week.

Green River Distilling and Green River Rye
Green River Rye Review at BourbonObsessed.com - Bourbon News February 9 2024

In my newsletter two weeks ago, I mentioned that Green River Distilling was releasing their first rye whiskey. I was fortunate to be able to head to Owensboro, Kentucky and attend their release day events, get reacquainted with the distillery and try their new rye. This 95/5 rye is very “approachable” and should appeal to those new to rye or who prefer a more balanced flavor profile than some of the other “in your face” 95/5 ryes out there. Blended from 4-6 year old barrels and bottled at 95 proof, it offers a great value at just $34.99. To see my full review and tasting notes, just follow this link: Green River Rye Review. If you want to learn more about the Green River Distilling Co, then you can check out our full write up here.

Bulleit Single Malt

Last week, I mentioned that the new Bulleit Single Malt appeared on store shelves, completely unannounced. We happened to see it during our travels, so bought a bottle. Since then, Bulleit has released a press release, although it doesn’t really give that much information. However, I have had a chance to taste my bottle a couple of times by now and review it. Aged in new oak barrels and offering notes of honey, caramel, and malt, it leans heavily on grainy and earthy flavors. While enjoyable enough, the balance falls short compared to other American single malts I have tried. You can read my full review and tasting notes here: Bulleit Single Malt Review

Now, on to the news!

Woodford Reserve Announces 2024 Batch Proof

Woodford Reserve Batch Proof is an annual limited release bourbon bottled at, well, batch proof. So what does that mean? Well, ”Batch Proof” is not a legal term, but more of a descriptive term that Woodford started using a few years back. This limited release is made from blending a “batch” of barrels of Woodford bourbon. The proofs of each of those barrels may differ, particularly if they are aged in different places in the warehouse, or in different warehouses. If those barrels are all mixed together with no water added, then the proof will be the average of all of the individual barrels. And that final proof is “Batch Proof”.

This particular batch is bottled at 121.2 proof, and the mash bill used is the same one that is used for standard 90.4 proof Woodford Reserve Bourbon. Woodford offers some additional information from Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall: “Barrels drawn from the upper floors of our heat cycled warehouses routinely possess higher proof presentations due to the more aggressive angel share process found there. This batch had more of these barrels in its composition, and therefore a higher batch proof presentation.”

The 2024 Woodford Reserve Batch Proof went on sale at the distillery and select retailers this Wednesday. So if you are a fan of this release, you can head on out and get one now. MSRP is $149.99, which is a $20 jump from last year.

This isn’t really a whiskey, but it’s whiskey-adjacent, and well… you’ll see

Fireball's New Cinnamon Delight Lipstick

Fireball’s New Cinnamon Delight Lipstick

Were you thinking that you needed more Fireball related products in your life? Well, then, you’re in luck! Just in time for the Super Bowl, Sazerac has released the first ever lipstick from Fireball!

From the company: “Cinnamon Delight features Fireball’s signature red color, along with its cinnamon flavor and aroma. And some fans will recognize that the name pays homage to a certain tight end and his choice of celebratory beverage from last year’s championship parade. A bold addition to game day attire everywhere, Fireball Cinnamon Delight goes on sale today (February 5) starting at 10AM EST at FireballWhisky.com for the affectionately easter-eggish price of $13.87.”

There’s a lot of innuendo in that press release, so I’ll explain it a bit. Of course, the tight end referred to is Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, who is to some known better as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend. Apparently at last year’s Super Bowl Championship parade, a fan had tossed Travis Kelce a Fireball mini and he promptly drank it. The bright red is a lipstick color said to be favored by Taylor Swift, and also similar to the colors of Super Bowl LVIII teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Regarding the numbers in the price, Travis Kelce’s jersey number is 87, and 13 is supposedly Taylor Swift’s lucky number; at least that is what a surprisingly large number of Google search results say.

So there you have it. Get yours today!😊

Jack Daniel’s Announces The Release of 10 & 12 Year Old Whiskeys

Jack Daniel’s is so much more than “Old No. 7”, especially these last few years. There have been the various Single Barrels and Heritage Barrels, as well as their Tennessee Tasters and Bonded releases, amongst others. (The full list of limited and special edition Jack Daniel’s whiskeys is here) Their latest announcement is for the Batch 2 of the Jack Daniel’s 12-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey and Batch 3 of the Jack Daniel’s 10-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey.

According to the press release: “Both expressions were charcoal mellowed and aged in new, toasted, and charred American white oak barrels first in the upper floors of our barrelhouse before being relocated to the lower ricks to extend the maturation process. Both share the same grain bill as the classic Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey of 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye.”

The 12-Year-Old is bottled at 107 proof, and the 10-Year-Old at 97 proof, both in 700ml bottles. The MSRPs are $94.99 and $84.99, respectively. However, I think you have to be lucky to find them at those prices. I have never seen either of the previous releases for less than double MSRP or more, and actually have never tried any of them. Maybe one day…

And for all the paczki fans….

Detroit City Distilling Releases Packzi Day Vodka

Detroit City Distillery released their Paczki Day Vodka, and their annual Paczki Day Party is this Saturday, February 10. I had no idea what paczki were until a reader of this newsletter informed me (thanks David!). According to a Michigan State University MSU Extension article, “In Polish-American culture, Pączki Day (punch-key) is a once-a-year event and is only celebrated on Fat Tuesday”. They go on to describe paczki as “Pączki are very rich donuts, deep fried and then filled with fruit or cream filling and covered with powdered sugar or icing.”

To make their vodka, the folks at Detroit City Distillery “procure Hamtramck’s finest raspberry pączki from the legendary New Palace Bakery and distill them in 100% Michigan and Polish potato vodka.”

That all sounds pretty interesting, and I really have to give this vodka, as well as paczki, a try sometime. The party sounds fun, too!
