Background
Weldon Mills Distillery was founded in 2018 by Bruce Tyler and Michael Hinderliter in North Carolina. In 2019, they brought on Mike Norman as Master Distiller, and the distillery has since focused on small-batch production using a grain-to-glass approach with locally sourced ingredients.
Weldon Mills Reserve is a barrel proof straight bourbon whiskey aged in oak barrels for at least two years. This Batch 3 release is bottled at 114.5 proof. I have previously reviewed the 94 proof Weldon Mills Select Bourbon, which I enjoyed very much. Let’s see what the same mash bill is like at a higher proof.

Tasting Notes – Weldon Mills Reserve Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Honey, cornbread, slightly burnt caramel, dark cherries; alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Moderately sweet, simple syrup, cornbread, raspberry jam, mild dry oak
👉🏻 Finish: Cornbread and lingering sweetness; later, white pepper spice, raspberry jam and increasingly dry; long, with mild spice, jam, tart orange citrus and dry wood continuing to the end
Cornbread, Honey, and Raspberry Jam
Similar to the 94 proof Weldon Mills bourbon, the nose of the Reserve also begins cornbread-forward, but adds honey, lightly burnt caramel, and dark cherries. On the palate, the cherries shift to raspberry jam, which carries through the finish. Cornbread is present throughout, while the fruit, mild spice, tart citrus, and dry wood create an enjoyable finish.
An Easy-Drinking Barrel Proof Bourbon with Cornbread and Fruit – Weldon Mills Reserve Bourbon Review
Weldon Mills Reserve is dangerously easy to drink at 114.5 proof. I honestly would have guessed it was lower. If you enjoy a full-flavored pot still distilled bourbon, this is one you will want to try. Have you tried Weldon Mills Reserve Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
