Wheel Horse Whiskey

Wheel Horse bourbon is distilled at the Green River Distilling Co., in Owensboro, KY which was originally founded in 1885. The Wheel Horse brand itself, however, was launched in 2019. After aging, the bourbon is then batched and bottled at Wheel Horse HQ in Rhode Island. The brand is owned by Latitude Beverages, which was founded in Boston, MA in 2009. This particular bourbon is the inaugural release of Wheel Horse Whiskey’s Barrel Master Select Series.

👉🏻 Taste: Mildly sweet from simple syrup; dark cherries, tart lime citrus, and hot cinnamon.

👉🏻 Finish: Growing, fairly pronounced, and lasting white pepper and hot cinnamon spice; tart lime citrus; mild dry wood; touch of smoky barrel char; long, with deep-down warmth; the flavors linger for quite some time.

Tasting Notes Narrative

The alcohol in the nose of Wheel Horse Barrel Master Select Barrel Proof Bourbon is noticeable—perhaps slightly more so than expected for the proof. Nonetheless, the nose is fairly sweet, with light caramel, dark cherries, and raspberry jam. Mild rye spices and hot cinnamon add contrast, along with light toasted oak and subtle hints of wintergreen and tart limes in the background.

The taste is mildly sweet from simple syrup, with dark cherries, tart limes, and hot cinnamon. Those flavors continue into the finish, where white pepper spice becomes more pronounced. Hot cinnamon remains, and as the spice diminishes, dry wood and mild smoky barrel char become more evident. The flavors linger for quite some time, leaving a long-lasting, deep warmth.

Conclusion

Wheel Horse Barrel Master Select Barrel Proof Bourbon delivers a bold, flavorful pour of sweet dark fruit, tart citrus, and warming spice at a price that’s hard to beat for a whiskey of this proof. At just $39.99 for a 750ml bottle, it’s an outstanding value — but with only 2,100 bottles available, it likely won’t be around for long. I’m really enjoying this one, and I suspect many barrel proof fans will, too. Have you tried this bourbon? What did you think? Cheers! 🥃
