Wheel Horse Whiskeys Are Distilled at Green River Distilling
All Wheel Horse Whiskeys are distilled at Green River Distilling in Owensboro, KY. They are then blended and bottled at Wheel Horse’s facility in Rhode Island. The brand’s flagship whiskeys are their Wheel Horse 101 Rye and Wheel Horse 101 Bourbon. In addition, they also have a number of limited releases, one of which is Wheel Horse Double Oak Bourbon.
The Specifics
Wheel Horse Double Oak Bourbon was distilled at Green River Distilling from a mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley. It was then aged for more than four years, and was subsequently transferred to char level 1 barrels made from staves which had undergone extensive air seasoning. After a little more than 6 months of additional aging in those barrels, the bourbon was dumped, blended and bottled, without chill-filtering. As a limited release, only 2,100 bottles were produced.
Tasting Notes – Wheel Horse Double Oak Bourbon Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn Glass
👉🏻Nose: Brown sugar, dry spicy oak, hot cinnamon candy, hints of Fruit Stripe gum; mild barrel char; alcohol vapor appropriate for proof
👉🏻Taste: Hot cinnamon, dry oak, light barrel char, mild brown sugar
👉🏻Finish: Hot cinnamon spice, mild dry oak and char; long with lingering spice and moderate warmth
The dominant flavor in the nose of Wheel Horse Double Oak Bourbon is dry spicy oak, with a supporting cast of moderately sweet brown sugar, hot cinnamon candies and hints of Fruit Stripe gum. There’s the slightest hint of smoky barrel char, as well.
The majority of those flavors continue into the taste, with the hot cinnamon candies now being the dominant flavor, and mild dry oak, brown sugar and mild barrel char being secondary. The body is a little on the lighter side, but the flavors are still very much present. In the finish, hot cinnamon spice takes center stage, again with relatively mild dry oak and barrel char. The finish is long, with a pleasant warmth.
Conclusion
Overall, Wheel Horse Double Oak Bourbon is an enjoyable pour. However, it is interesting that dry oak is most noticeable in the nose, but yet takes a back seat to hot cinnamon spice later on. That’s a bit atypical for a double oaked bourbon, where the richer flavors are usually present throughout, and spice is a bit more subdued. However, the flavor combination and transition work well, and make this bourbon quite easy to drink. If you are a fan of dry oak and hot cinnamon, they you’ll want to give this bourbon a try. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
