Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado Review

Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado Whiskey Review

The Cask of Amontillado is one of three whiskeys in Broken Barrel’s limited Single Oak Series. The other two are Isle of Peat and Mizunara. Only 6600 bottles of each were released. Each is a different blend of whiskeys finished with different broken barrels.

High West Double Rye! Review

High West Double Rye! Finished in Armagnac Barrels

High West Double Rye! is two, yes, two, ryes in one! According to High West “Double Rye! is a blend of two different rye whiskeys (aged 2-7 years). It is also crafted to be twice as spicy (think cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves) than your average rye whiskey.”

George Remus Single Barrel Bourbon Review

George Remus Single Barrel Review

Have you heard of George Remus bourbon? I didn’t think so. Have you heard of MGP? The company that produces the bourbon that shows up in some of your favorite brands? Well, the folks at MGP decided that they would take some of that bourbon and bottle it up and sell it themselves. One version is this George Remus Single Barrel Bourbon. You know what? It’s pretty good!

Rabbit Hole Bourbon

Rabbit Hole 4 grain Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

After Pernod Ricard acquired a majority share in Rabbit Hole back in 2019, the distillery rebranded their products, with a name change to honor influential figures and places in Louisville, as well as in the life of founder Kaveh Zamanian. I have always been a bit confused by the naming of Rabbit Hole Bourbon and Rye, so I’m just going to take a minute to clarify that for myself. You all are welcome to come along!

Wildcatter Bourbon Review

This Wildcatter Bourbon is a bottle we picked up a few years back, and for some reason I am just getting around to opening it now. It was around $30 back then; pretty reasonable for an 8 year old bourbon. A quick search on Google shows that it goes for around $35 now at our local Total Wine, and it looks like the label has been revised. I did just find a bottle on sale for $25, so there are some deals out there.

Angel’s Envy Bourbon Finished in Mizunara Oak Casks Review

The Angel’s Envy Bourbon Finished in Mizunara Oak Casks was released in honor of Angel’s Envy’s Founder’s Day, the day that they filled their very first barrel. It is a blend of four year-old and nine year-old bourbons, then finished for two years in Japanese Mizunara oak casks for two more years. Only 1200 bottles were produced, so finding one of these isn’t easy. A good percentage of these sold out during an online pre-sale and on release day at the distillery. There subsequently was a very limited distribution of these bottles to bars/restaurants and retailers.

Elijah Craig Beer Barrel Finish Bourbon Review

Elijah Craig Beer Barrel Finish Bourbon

So this Elijah Craig Beer Barrel Finish Bourbon is super cool. It all began when Heaven Hill made a batch of their Elijah Craig Bourbon. It turns out that wasn’t just any Elijah Craig, it was the Elijah Craig that was crowned Whiskey of the Year back in 2018! The folks at Heaven Hill didn’t just chop up those empty barrels and use them for kindling. Oh, no. They sent those barrels to the fine folks at Goose Island Beer Company in Chicago. I know what you are thinking. They made planters out of them to decorate their breweries and tap rooms. Well, that’s not quite correct. They made one heck of an imperial stout and aged it for a year in those barrels. Then they released it on Black Friday 2018 as Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, one of my favorite beers!

Woodford Five Wood Bourbon Review

Woodford Reserve Five Wood Review

1792 225th Anniversary Bourbon Review

1792 225th Anniversary Bourbon Review

The 1792 225th Anniversary Bourbon was a limited release from Barton 1792 in 2017 to commemorate the 225th anniversary of Kentucky becoming a state. According to the label “a distinct group of barrels have been carefully selected and married together” to make this bourbon. No age statement is given, but the label states “after aging nearly a decade”, so this bourbon is in the neighborhood of 10 years old. It’s bottled at 92.15 proof. 92 for the year 1792, and 15 for Kentucky being the 15th state to join the union. This bourbon was only sold in Kentucky.

Old Fitzgerald 11 Years Aged Bourbon Review

Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond Decanter

eaven Hill began releasing the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond decanters in the Spring of 2018. This Old Fitzgerald 11 Years Aged Bourbon was the first of the series. There are Spring and Fall releases every year, although the Spring release may arrive in Summer and the Fall release may arrive in winter.

Parker’s Heritage Orange Curacao Finished Bourbon Review

Parker's Heritage Orange Curacao Finished Bourbon Review

For this Parker’s Heritage Orange Curacao Finished Bourbon, the folks at Heaven Hill Distillery began with 7-8 year old Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. Then it was finished for four months in barrels which once held French orange curaçao. The bourbon is non-chill filtered to preserve all of the flavors.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye

If you are in the mood for that rye flavor through and through, then I’d reach for a 95/5 rye. But if you would like something with some unexpected flavors and a bit less of the concentrated rye notes, then this Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is definitely worth a try, and by the way, is very aptly named.

Bardstown Bourbon Company Château de Laubade Bourbon Review

Bardstown Bourbon Company Château de Laubade Bourbon

The Bardstown Bourbon Company Château de Laubade Bourbon is one of BBC’s most recent releases. It is part of their Collaborative Series, which as the name implies, utilizes barrels from other spirits to finish their whiskey. It’s a 12 year old Indiana bourbon finished in Château de Laubade Armagnac barrels for 18 months.

Peerless Absinthe Barrel Finished Rye Review

Peerless Absinthe Barrel Finished Rye

The Peerless absinthe barrel finished rye is one of two spirits produced as a collaboration between Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. and Copper & Kings American Brandy Company. The rye starts as regular Peerless rye. Then it is finished for an undisclosed amount of time in barrels which were previously used by Copper & Kings to age their absinthe.

Woodford Three Grain Whiskey Review

Woodford Distillery Series Three Grain

The Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Three Grain Whiskey is a blend of bourbon, malt and rye whiskeys. The whiskeys are aged in both new and used charred American White Oak.

George Dickel Bottled In Bond – A New Vintage Of Their Award-Winning Whisky

Dickel Bottled-in-Bond 11 yr old Whiskey

Bold and balanced, this 11-year-old whisky was bottled in Fall 2008 and offers tantalizing notes of pecan, maple syrup and dried apple. At 100 proof (50% ABV), this release of George Dickel Bottled in Bond is best enjoyed slowly neat or on the rocks and plays well in many classic cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Perfect Manhattan.

Elijah Craig – Father of Bourbon?

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Elijah Craig 18 & Elijah Craig 23

Elijah Craig is purported to be the “Father of Bourbon” according to the folks at Heaven Hill Distillery. They credit him with being the first to put his whiskey into charred barrels, although the exact details are unclear. His barrels may have been burnt in a fire and used anyway, with the resultant whiskey receiving a favorable reception.

Pikesville Rye – A Maryland Rye

Pikesville Rye Review

Pikesville Rye is said to be a Maryland Rye made by Heaven Hill Distillery. The accepted defining characteristics of Maryland Rye now-a-days seem to be that it contains a fairly high corn content, and it’s a little more sweet and a little less spicy than ryes made with much higher percentages of rye in their mashbills.

Barrell Craft Spirits 15 Year Old Bourbon Review (2nd Release)

Barrell Craft Spirits 15 year 2019 release

Barrel Craft Spirits 15 year old bourbon was named Best American Whiskey of 2018 by Fred Minnick in Forbes. That immediately made it highly sought after and next to impossible to find. The following year, Barrell quietly released this second release, which, like the others in the Barrell Craft Spirits line, sells for significantly more than the regular Barrell releases. I was fortunate enough to taste the first release, and enjoyed it, so I purchased the second release when it became available.

Bulleit Blenders’ Select Bourbon is a new limited release from Bulleit. This is a very enjoyable bourbon. It is a little lighter, sweeter and fruitier than I was expecting, but the flavors go well together.
