Winchester Ammunition has officially entered the whiskey market with the launch of Winchester Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. While the brand is famous for ammunition, this whiskey is “crafted for the adventure” and is distilled in Kentucky before being bottled at the “Model 1866 Distillery”—a nod to Winchester’s founding year—housed within Ugly Dog Distillery in Chelsea, Michigan. It is a high-rye bourbon that aims to appeal to both outdoor enthusiasts and bourbon lovers alike.

Tasting Notes – Winchester Kentucky Straight Bourbon Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Butterscotch, sweet apples, tart citrus, mild cinnamon, hints of floral notes; alcohol vapor is appropriate for the proof.
👉🏻Taste: Apples, sweet dried apricots, increasingly spicy cinnamon, tart lemon-lime citrus.
👉🏻Finish: Hot cinnamon spice continues to increase; progressively dry; mildly tannic later on; mild char; lingering spice, sweet apple and tart citrus; fairly long; pleasant deep warmth.

Summary

The nose of Winchester Kentucky Straight Bourbon has somewhat of an apple pie character due to the combination of butterscotch, sweet apples, and cinnamon. However, the tart citrus adds a nice contrast to those notes.

The flavors are similar to those in the nose early on in the palate. However, as the sip progresses, the increasingly spicy cinnamon, progressive dryness, and lingering citrus—joined by a touch of barrel char—make for a nice conclusion.

Overall, I am very much enjoying Winchester Kentucky Straight Bourbon. My podcast cohost, Dean, tried it as well and had similar sentiments. He commented that it was an easy-drinking pour that would make an excellent choice for someone new to bourbon. I absolutely agree. To support that, Dean and I both had no problem finishing our pours while recording our podcast at 10 AM Sunday morning. Not that we are suggesting that you start your day with a nice pour of bourbon…

Conclusion

Winchester Kentucky Straight Bourbon should please both the seasoned bourbon drinker looking for a full-flavored lower proof pour, as well as the bourbon novice. If you are looking for a Kentucky bourbon that delivers on flavor while keeping the proof relatively low, give it a try. I think you’ll be happy that you did!

Have you tried the Winchester Kentucky Straight Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
