A Big Step For Wolves

Wolves American Single Malt Whiskey represents a big step for the Wolves Whiskey brand. While the brand’s previous focus was entirely on limited editions, this American Single Malt represents the brand’s first flagship whiskey, to be available year-round.

Wolves American Single Malt was distilled in 2019 using a copper pot still. It was then aged for five years in California French Oak wine barrels in the Arizona heat. Afterwards, it was blended from hand-selected barrels, and finally, it was finished in aged Cognac casks.

Tasting Notes – Wolves American Single Malt Whiskey Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet pears, sweet tangerines, honey, sweet caramel & mild sweet malt; relatively mild alcohol vapor
👉🏻Taste: Tart tangelos, sweet honey & pears; light malt background
👉🏻Finish: Growing and lingering capsaicin spice; cognac notes; mild maltiness; increasingly dry; fading honey; mild barrel char and dry wood; long; pleasant warmth

The nose is fruit forward and fairly sweet, with pears, caramel and honey. Tangerines add some sweetness, but contrasting citrus, as well. There is a subtle graininess from the malt, and a mild alcohol vapor. Similar flavors continue into the taste, with the citrus, becoming a bit more tart, such as from tangelos. Sweet honey and pears continue, with a pleasant, fairly mild, maltiness. The long finish turns spicier and drier later on, with capsaicin spice, fading honey, more evident cognac notes, mild maltiness, mild barrel char and dry wood. In the end, there is a pleasant warmth.

Summary – Wolves American Single Malt Whiskey Review

Oftentimes, American Single Malts can have a fairly pronounced malt graininess, with that character dominating all of the other flavors. That is not the case with Wolves American Single Malt. While the malt is present throughout, it is not front and center. It’s fruit and honey that take that position in the nose and taste, with spice and developing dryness leading the way in the finish. The balance of flavors is a bit more typical of the unpeated European Single Malts, in that respect, than of many of its American counterparts.

If you are a fan of a fruitier, fairly sweet, American Single Malt, with relatively mild maltiness, then you’ll want to give Wolves American Single Malt a try! Have you tasted it? What did you think?
