Woodinville Expands Its Single Barrel Program Nationally

Woodinville has expanded its single-barrel program nationally with the release of its Single Barrel Cask Strength 7 Year Bourbon and Single Barrel Cask Strength 7 Year 100% Rye. Although the two whiskeys were released together, this review focuses on the rye.

Woodinville Co-Founder and Head Distiller Brett Carlile personally tastes hundreds of barrels and selects only those he considers the best for the program. Each selection is aged for a minimum of seven years, and the proof varies by barrel.

The rye begins with grain cultivated exclusively for Woodinville by the Omlin family farm in Quincy, Washington. Woodinville mashes and distills the rye at its distillery in Woodinville before transporting it across the Cascade Mountains for barreling and aging in its private barrel houses in Central Washington.

Before the barrels are coopered, the wood is seasoned outdoors for 18 months through rain, wind, sun, and snow. The barrels are then deeply toasted and heavily charred. According to Woodinville, Central Washington’s extreme temperature cycles promote the extraction of flavors from the oak.

Tasting Notes — Woodinville Single Barrel Cask Strength 7 Year 100% Rye Review

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Sweet apple cider, light cinnamon, cloves, caramel, light oak, and a touch of tart citrus; alcohol vapor is a bit less than expected for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Apple juice, caramel, and tart lime citrus; cinnamon develops later, along with light dry wood
👉🏻 Finish: Fading apple cider; hot cinnamon and cloves; rapidly becomes dry; white pepper spice grows later; long, with lingering spice and dry wood

Apple Cider and Rye Spices Define This Woodinville Rye

The sweet apple cider notes in Woodinville Single Barrel Cask Strength 7 Year 100% Rye are quite unique. They are present from the nose through the finish, although they become a bit more apple juice-like in the taste and fade considerably during the finish. I can’t remember encountering such pronounced apple notes in a rye before. They combine beautifully with the cinnamon, tart citrus, cloves, and sweet caramel, making me feel that this would be an ideal cold-weather whiskey, particularly to sip around a fire.

However, the finish brings quite a transformation from those sweeter notes, with growing cinnamon and white pepper spice, as well as a fairly dry mouthfeel and lingering dry wood.

A Delicious Rye Ideal for Cold-Weather Sipping

Washington’s climate, along with the 18 months of wood seasoning, may well play a role in creating this rye’s distinctive flavors. Whatever the reason, the result is quite delicious. If the combination of apple cider, cinnamon, and rye spices appeals to you, Woodinville Single Barrel Cask Strength 7 Year 100% Rye is one you’ll want to try. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
