The World Whiskey Society Has Released Their First Hazmat Whiskey

World Whiskey Society Wyatt Earp 13 Year-Old American Whiskey is the first “hazmat” whiskey from the brand. Hazmat (or HAZMAT) is the abbreviation or term used for hazardous materials, including any item or chemical which is a health hazard or physical hazard. Since alcohol is a flammable liquid, it is considered as hazmat (generally for air transportation purposes) at 140 proof or greater. Therefore, as this whiskey clocks in at over 160 proof, it would certainly quality.

The Specifics

World Whiskey Society Wyatt Earp Hazmat 13 Year American Whiskey is crafted from a mash bill of 73% Malted Barley, 14.9% Malted Rye, and 12.1% Malted Wheat. It is aged for 13 years in charred American oak barrels. According to the press release, this whiskey is bottled at 160 proof, however, my sample is labeled 164.67 proof. Since on the WWS website, it says “Projected to be 80% ABV”, I am assuming that the final cask strength proof turned out to be 164.67.

Tasting Notes

Let’s taste it:

🛏 Rested for 15 minutes in a Glencairn

👉🏻Nose: Sweet brown sugar, burnt caramel, rich toffee and freshly ground French roast coffee; sweet mesquite & mild peat smoke; cherry and apricot leather candy; alcohol vapor less than expected for the proof
👉🏻Taste: Thick brown sugar simple syrup, tannins, light peaty smoke & cigar ash, French roast coffee and apricot leather candy
👉🏻Finish: Dark coffee grounds, cigar ash and moderate white pepper spice; lingering hints of fruit leather candy; long; deep down warmth; ash and mild spice linger forever

The nose of World Whiskey Society Wyatt Earp Hazmat 13 Year Whiskey was not at all what I expected. The flavors are rich and confectionery-like with sweet brown sugar, burnt caramel, and rich toffee. A bit of fruity sweetness, perhaps cherry and apricot leather candy, adds complexity. In addition, a healthy scoop of freshly ground French roast coffee adds nicely contrasting sharper flavors, along with sweet mesquite and lightly peaty smoke. The potency of the alcohol vapor is less than I expected for the 164.67 proof. However, what I expected was for my nose hairs to burn off. Fortunately, I’m pleased to report, they are still alive and well!

The taste is dominated by thick brown sugar simple syrup, as well as tannins, French Roast coffee, light cigar ash and peaty smoke, as well as apricot leather candy. The very long finish continues with dark coffee grounds, cigar ash, and quite noticeable white pepper spice. Hints of fruit leather candy remain, as well, providing a bit of sweetness within the spice, smoke and ash. A deep, warming sensation spreads through my chest, and remnants of ash and mild spice linger on in my mouth for what seems an eternity.

Summary

World Whiskey Society Wyatt Earp Hazmat 13 Year Whiskey is a truly unique spirit. And I mean that in a very good way. While I have had light whiskeys that approached this proof, it’s still rare to see a whiskey in this range. Nonetheless, despite its high proof, it offers a surprisingly rich nose and palate, with added notes of fruit candy, coffee and spice, along with a pleasant smokiness. If you’re a fan of bold, flavorful whiskey and aren’t afraid of a little heat, this is definitely one to try. Have you had this whiskey or any other over 160 proof? What did you think? Cheers! 🥃
