A Short Introduction to Mad River Distillers
Mad River Distillers produces whiskey, rum and apple brandy in Warren, Vermont, at a distillery established in a renovated horse barn. The team makes its spirits in-house, sourcing local and non-GMO grains wherever possible and using a two-stage pot distillation process for its whiskey.
For more about the distillery’s history, pot distillation process and Vermont aging, read my Mad River Burnt Rock Bourbon Review.
Four-Grain Bourbon Meets Vermont Maple Syrup
Double Tapped Maple Bourbon Whiskey combines Mad River’s straight bourbon, aged for at least two years, with “dark robust” Vermont maple syrup. The base bourbon uses a four-grain mash bill of 70% corn, 10% wheat, 10% oats and 10% malted barley.

Tasting Notes — Mad River Double Tapped Maple Bourbon Whiskey Review
Let’s taste it:
🛏 Rested: 15 minutes in a Glencairn glass
👉🏻 Nose: Moderately syrupy sweet, sweet corn, butter, sweet doughiness, maltiness and graininess; relatively mild maple syrup, alcohol vapor appropriate for the proof
👉🏻 Taste: Quite sweet, maple syrup, mild graininess, sweet cornbread and sweet doughiness
👉🏻 Finish: Maple syrup, graininess, mild white pepper spice; becomes somewhat dry; moderately long with lingering spice, mild maple syrup, char and dry wood
Sweet Cornbread and Maple Syrup, with a Drier Finish
Double Tapped is quite sweet overall, except for later on in the finish. The nose has a syrupy sweetness, with sweet corn and a sweet doughy character. The maple syrup notes, however, are relatively mild.
Nonetheless, that changes on the palate. The taste is quite sweet, with the maple syrup now much more evident alongside the sweet dough and mild graininess. The maple sweetness and sweet doughy cornbread of the base spirit blend surprisingly well. Those flavors continue into the finish, where the sweetness and maple gradually fade, and mild white pepper spice appears, grows and lingers. In the end, there is lingering maple syrup, spice, char and dry wood.
This spirit is not overly complex, but I don’t suspect that is its goal. The sweet doughy flavors are present from start to finish, and while I initially thought the sweetness might be overdone, I now feel that the balance is pretty close to perfect.
A Sweet Spirit That Has Grown on Me
Although I am not generally a fan of sweet spirits, I appreciate Double Tapped more and more every time I taste it. The combination of dough and cornbread sweetness with maple syrup is very unique and works surprisingly well. However, this is definitely a spirit for those who like things sweet. If that’s you, then this is one you’ll want to try! Have you tried the Mad River Double Tapped Maple Bourbon Whiskey? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
