Flagship Bourbon and Ingram’s Floating Barrelhouses
The Ingram Distillery ages its whiskey aboard floating barrelhouses on the Mississippi River in Columbus, Kentucky. Every fall, what they consider their finest barrels are selected from those barrelhouses for the annual limited release of Flagship Bourbon. Named after the leading vessel in a fleet, Flagship is Ingram’s signature expression.
For the sixth batch, Ingram selected seven-year-old wheated bourbon. According to the brand, the lower-deck barrels contribute a rounded character, while the upper-deck barrels add oak and intensity.

Classic Bourbon Flavors, Caramel and a Spicier Finish
Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 6 has classic bourbon flavors. It is mildly sweet on the nose, becoming spicier and drier in the finish. There is a nice mix of fruit, caramel and spice throughout, with the intensity of each varying through the sip. In the nose, the dark cherries take center stage, with caramel a close second. However, the mildly sweet caramel rises to the forefront in the taste. The finish still has those lingering sweet cherries, but it picks up more spice, tannins, dry wood and mild char.
A Return to Wheated Bourbon in the Largest Flagship Batch
Ingram Flagship Bourbon differs year over year, in both its components and taste. In fact, this is the second wheated batch, but the first to use Kentucky wheated bourbon barrels. It is also the largest Flagship batch to date, with 25 component barrels—just over twice the previous largest release of 12 barrels. It is one of the most mature, if not the most mature, with the barrels aged seven years.
Had I not known that this was a wheated bourbon, I wouldn’t have guessed it. While it certainly has the full body and flavors that I expect in a wheated bourbon, it has more spice and tannins. Those flavors can develop in wheated bourbons as they age, but they seem fairly pronounced for 7 years. I am assuming the development of these flavors in Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 6 has been accelerated by the river aging.
Full Flavors Take Classic Bourbon Notes One Step Farther
All in all, I am very much enjoying Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 6. I am a fan of bourbons with “classic” bourbon notes, but this bourbon takes them one step farther. The extra dose of caramel, the nice balance of spice, oak and tannins and the full flavors that this bourbon brings make it something special. If these are flavors that you enjoy as well, you’ll definitely want to give Ingram Flagship Bourbon Batch 6 a try. Have you had it? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
