Jackson Purchase Distillery and Kentucky Select Bourbon

Jackson Purchase Distillery is located in Hickman, in the far western corner of Kentucky. Although construction of the facility dates back to 2008, the current Jackson Purchase team took ownership in 2021 and began producing whiskey under the leadership of Master Distiller Craig Beam and Head Distiller Terry Ballard.

The distillery released its first branded bourbon, Select Batch, in September 2025. Jackson Purchase Kentucky Select Bourbon and Jackson Purchase Bottled in Bond Bourbon followed in July 2026. Kentucky Select was created as a Kentucky-exclusive expression.

Jackson Purchase produces all of the whiskey used in their bourbon expressions at the Hickman distillery. Nothing in their lineup is sourced from another producer.

Western Kentucky Climate and Palletized Warehouses

The distillery credits western Kentucky’s hot climate with helping its bourbon develop color and flavor relatively quickly. According to Jackson Purchase, this part of Kentucky has the state’s warmest and longest summers, with up to eight additional weeks of warmer weather.

As they expanded the distillery, the current team built two conventional rickhouses, each with a capacity of approximately 25,000 barrels. However, the whiskey used in all three current Jackson Purchase expressions was aged in a pre-existing palletized warehouse created from a former blue-jean factory in Hickman. In fact, Craig Beam, Terry Ballard and the rest of the team were so impressed by the bourbon coming from that warehouse that, instead of continuing to build conventional rickhouses, they started building more palletized warehouses.

Currently, a new 33,000-barrel palletized warehouse is already receiving whiskey and another with a capacity of 48,000 barrels is under construction. There is an ongoing debate about how bourbon aged in palletized warehouses compares with bourbon aged in conventional rickhouses, with strong opinions on both sides. Based on their prior experiences, Craig and Terry were initially skeptical of palletized warehouses, but they have since embraced them.

A Mature Profile at Four Years Old

The nose of Jackson Purchase Kentucky Select Bourbon is mildly sweet, with a pleasant combination of raspberry jam, sweet cherry candy and caramel. There is a pleasant contrast provided by light oak, rye spices like cloves and some tart orange peel. The taste is somewhat sweeter than the nose, with the raspberry jam turning more syrup-like and joined by a touch of simple syrup and cinnamon sugar. Otherwise, the flavors remain fairly similar to those in the nose.

However, in the finish, there is a bit of a change. The sweetness and syrups linger but diminish in intensity. Dried apricots are also added to the mix. White pepper spice develops and lingers along with the cinnamon sugar. As time goes on, the mouthfeel becomes drier, with mild dry wood and minimal char now evident. The sweet and tart fruits, spice and syrups linger as well.

Something Special Is Happening in Hickman

Bourbon seems to age differently down in Hickman. It appears to become darker, richer and more mature more quickly than bourbon aged elsewhere in Kentucky.

Whether it is the climate, the grains, the technique, the expertise of the team involved or a combination of all of these things, Jackson Purchase Kentucky Select Bourbon is definitely a success. I really enjoyed Jackson Purchase Kentucky Select Bourbon. In fact, all of the bourbons that I have tasted from the brand have been successes, too. With depth and flavors that suggest a bourbon of an older age, there is definitely something special going on down in Hickman.

Have you tried Jackson Purchase Kentucky Select Bourbon? What did you think? Cheers!🥃
